✨ The Magic of Kondoli Lanterns lit up Victor Harbor ✨

Last Sunday, our town came alive with light, story, and community spirit as the Kondoli Lantern Parade transformed Winter Whale Fest into something truly unforgettable.

Led by Ngarrindjeri Elders and artists – Mark Koolmatrie, Cedric Varcoe, Amanda Westley, and Kyla McHughes – the community worked alongside lantern experts to create stunning creature lanterns inspired by the Kondoli Dreamtime story. From Kondoli the whale, Milori the stingray, and Pungari the seal, to Ngrakani the shark, Kanmeri the mullet, Kuratji the tommy ruff, and Kribali the fire bird skylark, each lantern carried deep meaning.

When rain moved the parade indoors, the moment became even more intimate and powerful. The beat of clap sticks, giant glowing lanterns, storytelling by Mark Koolmatrie, and a breathtaking contemporary dance by Melanie Koolmatrie filled the Town Hall with wonder, before the parade continued outdoors for a spectacular finale under the night sky.

“This was a truly powerful moment,” said Mark Koolmatrie. “It showed what is possible when we walk together – culture and community coming alive as one.”
