In this month’s journal Julian reports that they’re feeding out silage at the moment as the grasses have dried off. The water table is dropping but the cows are in great condition and they’re also calving at the moment.

Have a listen as Julian talks about the start of the year on the farm.

Think dairy farming is just about milking cows? Think again! 🚜

A huge part of our job is "harvesting the sun"—growing and storing grass so our 🐄herd has high-quality feed all year round. Since grass doesn't grow at the same rate every month, we have to plan for the dry seasons well in advance.

Here we’re stacking bales of silage. We cut this during spring and wrap it in plastic to ferment. This gives it a sweet smell and locks in nutrients, creating an energy-rich meal for when paddocks dry off and lose their quality (like right now!).

While we’ve had virtually no rain over summer, late spring rains did allow us a second cut. This gave us a lot of hay to feed out when the grass is high in moisture in autumn and winter.

Today's mindfulness hack 🧘🏻🧘🏻‍♂️🧘🏻‍♀️

Find two minutes for a short break, turn up the sound🔊, sit back and relax to the natural sounds 🎵 from our farm.

Happy cows. Care for the land. A recipe for great milk and cheese.

It's hard to believe we've filmed 22 editions of our farm journal over the past two years!

It's all part of Julian's vision to harness the power of video to show people the reality of farming, which we publish monthly across YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook as well as on our website.

This is the last journal for 2025 and Julian talks about recent rains helping to turn the season around, leading to good pastures and strong production of which is critical feed for the drier months to come. Watch for updates on extended hours at the farmgate café as well as our presence at the Geelong City Market on Saturdays and Warrnambool Summer Markets Dec/Jan.

Hard to believe we're closing in on 20 editions of the Dairy Farm Journal with Julian at Apostle Whey Cheese.

Our relationship with Apostle Whey Cheese is close to two years old now and Julian is great to work with. He's a great communicator and most journals are done in a single take! Visits to the farm don't feel like work to us.

His love for the land and his animals is unquestionable. Hope you enjoy the videos.

Given Australia wastes 7.6 million tonnes of food annually I get inspired by regional innovation stories like this one.

Economic development strategies at regional councils up and down the country talk about the need for producers to "value add" and this is another great real world example.

Lawrence Cheng's Southern Forests Food Tech is:

🥑 producing avocado oil from "unsellable" avocados that do not meet market specifications
🥑 diverting this food waste on farms away from landfill and hence reducing emissions
🥑 creating new income streams for producers
🥑 processing more than 90 tonnes of waste into oil
🥑 primarily self-funded (presumably not dependent on grants)

In the heart of WA's prime avocado growing region, a former engineer is turning formerly rejected fruit into sought-after oil.

Got a little inspired and met some interesting people at a collaborative community ideation event hosted by Warrnambool City Council last weekend that I decided to share my thoughts about the experience.

In a nutshell, communities need their key stakeholders to run more events like these to bring people together to connect around themes and discuss ideas and develop solutions to challenges where they live.

A glimpse into the future?

While I enjoy creating videos for clients it's not one of my core skills, sitting behind copywriting, web design and project management, SEO and email marketing in my strengths. I have, however, improved my filming, audio and post-production skills a lot over the past decade.

The introduction of AI in post-production is an interesting one to watch: AI speech-to-text has shaved hours off the previously manual process of creating subtitles for videos.

I've been using and paying for CyberLink PowerDirector 365 for around two years now (which I recommend for its ease of use and affordability) and finally got around to kicking the tyres on its relatively new AI Anime Video feature.

This may not be the best sample video to try this cutting edge technology on but it's fascinating to see the output of something we couldn't have imagined possible just a couple of years ago. I didn't have to do anything other than choose an Anime style and then select a video to apply it to.

I love the power of video as a storytelling tool for business and I'm curious to see how AI transforms video in future as well as how businesses might get creative with it to stand out from the pack.
