"Reel-to-reel tape is the new vinyl" - Timely, have been working towards outfitting the studio to record to tape. Digital is convenient & competitive but only gives you a hollow shell of the actual sound sources being recorded and then even worse when compressed into the terrible format of mp3.
It doesn't compare to the sound quality of tape and the way how people always respond more positively to music recorded to tape. Digital only takes samples of the sounds being recorded and turns it into 1's and 0's for play back at particular sample rates. That's like comparing you to your image in the mirror.
Tape is a real analog voltage signal that is definitely so much easier to feel and connect with.
Like string theory, audiophile subculture is complex and defined by unresolved questions. Is an insanely expensive cable really better than an outrageously expensive cable? Do tube amps trump...
