Kap, we get this question a lot this week, especially after Monday's and Wednesday's posts: does my job count as 'Canadian work experience' for CEC?

Here's the short version. It has to be:
— Paid work, not a volunteer role or unpaid internship
— Full-time (or the equivalent in part-time hours), for at least 12 months total in the last 3 years
— Performed while you were legally authorized to work in Canada — physically in the country
— In a skilled occupation under Canada's classification system (most professional, technical, and skilled trade roles qualify)

Working remotely for a Canadian employer while you're living outside Canada does not count, even if you're paid in Canadian dollars and have a Canadian manager.

The work has to happen inside Canada.

September 1's Express Entry draw only invited Canadian Experience Class candidates — 2,000 people, all with Canadian work experience, CRS cutoff 521.

It was the 51st draw of the year, and CIC News has flagged the pattern all year: 2026 draws have generally favoured people already connected to Canada — provincial nominees and workers with Canadian experience.

If you're building your profile from outside the country, that's a real thing to plan around, not panic about.

It doesn't mean the door is shut. It means the fastest lanes right now go to people who already have a Canadian job, a PNP nomination, or category-based eligibility.

You have been teaching for years. You are good at it.

And somewhere in the last stretch, a question started showing up at 11pm while you were still marking papers.

Is there a future for me in Canada?

Here is what most teachers do not know. Education is one of ten Express Entry categories Canada is actively drawing from in 2026. It was announced on February 18 and it is still live.

Five occupations qualify:

Secondary school teachers (NOC 41220)
Elementary school and kindergarten teachers (NOC 41221)
Early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 42202)
Instructors of persons with disabilities (NOC 42203)
Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants (NOC 43100)

You need 12 months of full time experience in one of those occupations in the last 3 years. Here is the part that changes everything for people reading this from overseas: that experience can be from Canada or from abroad.

And here is the part almost nobody explains properly. Qualifying to immigrate and being licensed to teach in Nova Scotia are two completely different processes, run by two different bodies, in a specific order. Getting that order wrong costs people months.
