C'est la Journée de la Francophonie ! Une journée pour célébrer la langue française et la culture francophone. It’s Francophonie Day! A day to celebrate the French language and Francophone culture.

March 20, 2026, has been proclaimed by British Columbia as the Francophonie Day, underlining the social, cultural, and economic contributions of francophones throughout the province. To mark the occasion, the B.C. francophone community flag will be raised at the B.C. Parliament Buildings.

It is significant that British Columbia has the third-largest population of bilingual French-English speakers in Canada. Throughout the province, 46 francophone schools form the Francophone School Board. In 2024-2025, around 8% of B.C.’s student population was enrolled in a French immersion program.

In Canada, 22% of the population declared French as their first language as of 2021. Canada’s commitment to the Francophonie also extends to the international stage: it has been an active participant in the International Organisation of La Francophonie for over 50 years and is a founding member. A wide range of cultural activities are organized throughout the country to celebrate the Francophone communities across Canada.

Outside the country, it is 220 million francophones from five different continents that will celebrate the language on this occasion initially created in 1988.
