Build Nova Scotia is proud to recognize Site Supervisors Amandeep Singh and Prabhleen Singh for their quick actions at Peggy’s Cove’s Black Rocks area.

As part of the seasonal Safety and Harm Prevention Program, attendants help keep visitors safe through education, communication, and on-site intervention.

On May 23, Amandeep performed CPR on an unconscious 16-year-old, helping restore breathing with support from a nurse, while Prabhleen assisted on site until emergency services arrived and took over.

Reflecting on the incident, Amandeep highlighted the importance of being prepared. “I am grateful that I was in the right place at the right time,” they said. “My first aid and CPR training gave me the confidence to act quickly. Emergencies can happen at any time, and proper training can make a significant difference and even save a life.”

SECURITY for Community Housing

Providing security at your residential or community housing property is an expense — plain and simple.

But not doing your due diligence? That’s an even bigger expense.

That’s why we developed the Safety Support Worker (SSW) Program.

We provide a thorough safety and security risk assessment, along with a detailed management plan designed to address vulnerabilities and enhance overall site safety.

What is a Safety Support Worker?
A Safety Support Worker is a licensed private security guard authorized by the Department of Justice, uniquely trained to serve in community housing environments. SSWs go beyond traditional security — they are compassionate professionals who help individuals navigate life’s challenges while maintaining a safe and stable housing environment.

Core Responsibilities:

- Monitor and maintain safety within residential facilities

- Provide support to individuals facing mental, emotional, physical, or social challenges

- Attend to minor maintenance concerns and report facility issues

- Emergency response and incident management

- Serve as a liaison between residents and vital services (e.g., emergency responders, social services, housing authorities)

Why It Matters:
SSWs build trust and rapport with residents from diverse backgrounds, fostering a sense of security and community. They provide a human connection that encourages cooperation and compliance, helping residents access the resources they need to live safer, more fulfilling lives.

Safety & Support Workers form strong, trusting relationships with people from all backgrounds, offering compassion, empathy, and respect. They help those struggling with mental health issues, addiction, or those at risk of violence and abuse, all while maintaining safety as their primary focus.

Roles & Responsibilities
✔️ Due Diligence & Legal Liability: Ensure compliance with laws to reduce risks and liability.
✔️ Personalized Assistance: Help individuals access support and services.
✔️ Safety Monitoring: Patrol areas and respond to emergencies.
✔️ Collaboration: Work with professionals to maintain open communication.
✔️ Emergency Education: Teach tenants about safety procedures.
✔️ Crisis Response: Provide first aid and assist emergency services.
✔️ Detailed Reporting: Record incidents for accountability.
✔️ Property Management Support: Identify and report safety hazards.

SSWs are essential in fostering safer, more supportive communities. They bridge the gap between those in need and the help they deserve.
