"Who worked Thursday?"

It's Monday morning and you're doing payroll.

Not from a timesheet.
From evidence.

A photo of a notebook page.
A text that says "9 on Thursday, I think."
Hours written on the back of a parts receipt.
One guy who's sure he worked Saturday.
One guy who's sure he didn't.

And you, trying to remember who was on which job six days ago.

The week hasn't even started.
You're still settling last week's hours.

Here's the thing nobody says out loud.

The person who remembers most confidently gets paid the most.
Not the person who worked the most.

Then the invoice goes out on the same guesses.
So the customer gets billed from memory too.

Hours should get written down where the work happens.
When it happens.
By the person doing it.
Not rebuilt Monday morning from texts.

You've got enough to figure out on a Monday.
Last Thursday shouldn't be one of them.

This week we went looking at local business websites.

Not the good ones. The other ones.

The "under construction" page that has said under construction since spring.
The domain that expired and nobody noticed.
The phone number on the contact page that dials nothing.
The site that was last touched in 2016.

Good businesses. Busy ones.
People too busy doing the work to look at the thing customers see first.

Here's what we didn't do.
We didn't write a proposal and ask for a meeting.

We built the first page.
Their trade. Their town. A phone number that rings. A form that lands somewhere.
On a live link, before a dollar changed hands.

Anybody can promise you a website.
A link is proof.

We built our own software and our own site first.
That's why we don't mind building yours before you've said yes.

"Three hours on a quote for a job you were never going to get."

It's 9pm. Kitchen table.

Laptop open. Coffee gone cold. The kids' homework pushed to one side so you can spread out the measurements.

You're building a quote.

Careful. Itemized. Priced right. The kind of quote that shows you know what you're doing.

And the person you're building it for called four other companies today.

They were never choosing a contractor. They were collecting numbers.

Here's the real cost, and it's not the job you lose.

It's the evenings you spend losing it.

Say you write five quotes a week. Say two of those were never going to close.
That's six hours a week at the kitchen table for nothing.

Same long weekend. Same turkey. Two very different Fridays.

The first owner is thankful for the business.
It paid for the house everyone's sitting in. It runs Saturday without him. His phone is in a drawer.

The second owner is thankful for three days away from it.
He's counting down to Tuesday already, because Tuesday is when the pile he left gets worse.

Here's the thing nobody says.

The difference between them is not how well the business is doing.

Both are busy. Both are good at the work. Both have customers who'd recommend them.

The difference is whether it runs when he's not holding it.

Nobody at that table is thankful for his response time.
Nobody passes the potatoes and says "I'm grateful dad answered that email."

They're thankful he's there.
All of him. Not the half that's listening for the phone.

So this weekend, notice which owner you are.

And if it's the second one, that's not a character flaw. It's a systems problem.
Systems problems can be fixed.

Build the kind of business you're grateful for on Monday.
Not the kind you escape on Friday.

"The second trip."

You've made this drive before.

Same house. Same customer. Same job.

Not because the work failed. The work was fine.

Because the gate code was in a text on the office phone.
Because the panel was on the other side of the house and nobody wrote that down.
Because the customer said something important on the first call and it never reached the truck.
Because the part was on the other van.

So you drive back.

Forty minutes each way. Two hours gone.
A slot you could have sold to somebody else.
And a customer who now thinks you're disorganised, even though the work was good.

You didn't do the job twice.

You drove there twice.

Those are different costs, and only one of them was ever necessary.

Count your second trips this month. Honestly.
Then notice none of them were about skill.
Every one of them was information that didn't travel.

Whatever the office knows, the truck should know before it leaves.
The code. The notes. The part. The thing the customer said.

One place, on the dash, before the engine starts.

The first trip is the job. The second trip is the leak.

"The photo that proves you did it right is on your phone. Next to four thousand others."

You take the picture. Everybody does.

The panel before you closed it up.
The flashing before the shingles went on.
The old unit, the new unit, the serial plate.

Then the phone goes back in your pocket and the photo starts aging.

Six months later the call comes.
"That wasn't like that when you left."

And you know it was. You have the photo.

Somewhere.

Between the dog, the kids, forty screenshots and every job since.

You sit in the truck and scroll for twenty minutes.
Maybe you find it.
Maybe you find one from the house next door.

Here is the teaching part.

A photo is only proof if you can find it by the job.
Not by the date you think it was.
By the address. By the customer.

So the rule is simple.
The photo gets attached the moment it gets taken.
Before you leave the driveway.
Before it has a chance to become one of four thousand.

Picture. Job. Done. Fifteen seconds.

Now the dispute is a thirty-second answer instead of an afternoon.
The warranty question answers itself.
The adjuster gets what they asked for the same day.
And the new guy can see exactly how the last three were done before he does the fourth.

Your work was good.

Make the proof as easy to find as the complaint.

"On Tuesday I said a screen should tell you when it's down. This week ours did."

We run a signage network.

Dozens of screens. Multiple locations. Clients who count on them every day.
