As a small business owner I know how challenging it can be to ask for referrals. There is a sacred contract between you and your customer that is built on trust, loyalty and extraordinary service. It can feel pushy to ask for referrals, and yet without them it is challenging to build your brand and your business. The secret to building referrals is to lock down your position with your existing customer first, BEFORE asking if you can work with their circle of influence. So often I hear advisors asking for referrals before the simple question, are YOU happy with my service? It's a small difference but there is an order to retention that always starts with your existing customer first. If they are delighted with you, their endorsement is a natural next step.

Every professional sales consultant has a repertoire of questions that convert shoppers into customers - even when someone is "just looking." You can hear the dress shop associate asking, are you looking for something in particular? For the 100 times I have heard it, my answer 99% of the time is, no, just looking... even when I am actually desperate to find exactly the right thing for an event. Why is that? Most often, it's because I want to be free to explore on my own. Yet when you do find the right person, their insight can be invaluable. The key ingredient is a repertoire of discovery questions that establish trust and display a genuine curiosity for what they will say next.

When I first started my business I made a sale. I woop wooped around my living room and ran to tell my husband, "She said yes!!" I can't believe it! It was a life altering moment. Every sales person can relate to their first yes. Why then, do we not create more opportunities of getting to yes? Yes is only the beginning. Yes, to the meeting, yes to the initial purchase, yes to the pre and post package, yes to the insurance, and yes all the other opportunities to create a better experience? The initial sale is only the beginning. The more planning, preparation, small details that can be covered before a client leaves, the more they have to look forward to.

My mentor blocks 15 minute meetings. Not one hour, not thirty mintues but 15 minutes, four times a year. When you shorten the time but give plenty of notice, both people undertand the seconds count. It takes practice to be present and prepared. It takes discipline to circle back and check in.

Like an iceberg, the meeting is only the tip of the time invested, but the return is lifechanging.
