One of the strongest indicators of workplace culture is this:

What happens when someone doesn’t show up?

Not the policy.
Not the paperwork.
Not whether attendance gets documented correctly.

What happens humanly?

Do people notice?
Does someone check?
Does anyone care enough to call?

I once worked in a remote environment where an employee didn’t show up for work.

No call.
No message.
No explanation.

No one checked on them.

I remember pushing hard that we needed to make the call.

Not because of policy.
Because of humanity.

We talk about leadership constantly in terms of performance, accountability, and results.

But sometimes leadership looks much simpler than that.

Sometimes it looks like noticing someone is missing.
Sometimes it looks like making the call.

I recently wrote a blog about this conversation, the leadership debate that followed, and the moment that completely reinforced why this matters so much.

Because your leadership is not just measured when everything is running smoothly.

It’s measured in how you respond when someone is missing.

Join us for the Business Basics for Kids Workshop, a Chamber for Good initiative designed for youth ages 10–14 who are curious about entrepreneurship and how business works in the real world. Delivered with the support of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., this hands-on workshop includes conversations with local business leaders and a behind-the-scenes visit to a business in Urban Park. Every time you protect a toxic high performer, your team trusts you less.

A lot of leaders tolerate behaviour from high performers that they would never accept from anyone else.

Because the person gets results.
Because they’re technically strong.
Because losing them feels risky.

So the behaviour gets tolerated.

The disrespect.
The negativity.
The impact everyone else quietly absorbs.

While leaders think they’re protecting performance, the team sees something very different.

They see inconsistency.
They see double standards.
They see that values only matter when they’re convenient.

Nothing erodes trust faster than watching bad behaviour get excused because someone performs well.

Culture is not shaped by what leaders say in meetings.
It’s shaped by what leaders tolerate in practice.

When toxic behaviour goes unaddressed, people stop believing accountability actually matters.

Not because the standards were unclear.
But because they weren’t applied consistently.

High performance should never buy immunity from behaviour expectations.

The higher the influence, the higher the responsibility.

TRY THIS: Ask yourself, “What behaviour am I currently tolerating because the person performs well?” Then ask the harder question: “What is that teaching everyone else?”

We were incredibly honoured to receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the Canadian Department of National Defence. It was made even more special as Major Mike Lapointe took the time to personally visit us and present the certificates on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces.

This recognition was made possible by one of our own, Cory Gravel, who generously nominated us. Cory has been an electrical apprentice with Johnston’s Electrical for the past year and a half, but he also proudly serves our country as a Second Lieutenant in the Canadian Armed Forces. Watching him balance his commitment to both his military service and his career is something we greatly admire.

At Johnston’s Electrical, we believe that a career is only one part of a person’s story. Supporting a healthy work-life balance means encouraging our team to pursue their passions, give back to their communities, and serve causes greater than themselves. Cory is a perfect example of that.

We’d like to sincerely thank Cory for this thoughtful nomination, Major Mike Lapointe for taking the time to present the awards in person, and all the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces for their service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to our country.
