Le Château Prieuré-Lichine fut créé au XVe siècle par les moines bénédictins de l’Abbaye de Vertheuil en Médoc. Privatisé à la Révolution Française, le château Prieuré de Cantenac passe entre les mains de nombreuses familles avant d’être racheté en 1951 par Alexis Lichine, russe d’origine, grand homme du vin et des mots, auteur de la célèbre Encyclopédie des Vins et des Alcools. Grâce à une politi
que faite de patience et d’obstination, il dote son cru de nouveaux terroirs, modernise les installations existantes et fait reconstruire l’ancienne demeure ecclésiastique. Le Château lie sa destinée à la famille Lichine pendant près d’un demi-siècle. En 1999, ce cru de 70 hectares devient propriété de la famille Ballande. Conseillé par Stéphane Derenoncourt, le domaine poursuit son histoire en prenant un nouvel élan, et s’agrandit de 8 hectares en 2012. Les vignes, plantées à 50% de Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% de Merlot et 5% de Petit Verdot, sont toutes vendangées à la main et produisent des vins fins, riches et élégants.

Founded in the Romanesque era by the monks of the Abbey of Vertheuil, the Priory of Cantenac produced wines renowned in those days for their high quality. The
vineyard belonged to the Church until the French Revolution. In 1951, Alexis Lichine, a man of Russian origin and a well-known figure in the world of wine and letters bought the estate. He renamed the domain “Château Prieuré-Lichine » in 1953. Thanks to his great patience and persistence, he endowed his domain with extra plots, modernized the existing installations and renovate the monks’ former living
quarters. The Château has been associated with the Lichine family for over half a century. In 1999, this domain of 173 acres became the property of the Ballande family, and was extended by the acquisition of 19 acres in 2012. Under the advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt, the domain has a new found impetus, investing in the future of the château. The vines, planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, are all hand-picked and make excellent, rich, and elegant wines.
