Very honoured to be asked to host the auction for The Hospice of St Francis. Barrie Twyman, one of our Auctioneers, pulled out all the stops again this year and helped raise £6000 for the auction which contributed to a more than £30000 total on the day. This is a local charity, very close to our hearts and we are grateful to have been allowed to play a small part in this event

Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller - a Dutch street scene (Sold £620)

Wijsmuller studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam under August Allebé. He was an active member of the Amsterdam art society.

Though best known for his lively urban views of Old Amsterdam (canals, markets, and street scenes), he also frequently painted coastal dunes, polder landscapes, and windmills around Kortenhoef, Katwijk, and Noordwijk.

A 19thC carved bone model, a prowling, snarling lion (Sold £85)

We believe it to be a carved Japanese Meiji-period (or early 20th-century) okimono figure depicting a prowling or roaring lion.

Inset eye detail (likely mother-of-pearl or dark horn pupillary inlay). Inlaying animal eyes was a trademark technique of Meiji-era carving schools, particularly the Tokyo School (Tokyo Chokoku).

John Ebsworth (c. 1643–1699) was a prominent 17th-century English clockmaker who operated during the golden age of British horology.

Recognized for producing fine-quality lantern clocks, table/bracket clocks, and early longcase clocks. Examples of his work are held in major public and royal collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Collection Trust.

A Chinese bronze lidded censor (Sold £40)

This is a Chinese tripod censer featuring relief-carved prunus (plum blossom) branches. The six characters on the base (大明宣德年製) are crisp and clear. The translation ("Made in the Xuande Period of the Great Ming Dynasty") is definitive.

Genuine Xuande period (1426–1435) bronzes are extraordinarily rare, with fewer than a few dozen undisputed museum-standard pieces known worldwide. The Xuande mark became the most widely copied apocryphal mark in Chinese decorative art history, placed on metalwork for centuries afterward to honor the high-water mark of Chinese bronze casting.
