Townsend Enterprise Park is registered as a company limited by guarantee in Northern Ireland (No 20329) and is registered as a charity for tax purposes with the Inland Revenue (No XR 93502). Since the company was founded in 1987, the Directors have been guided by an ethos of service to the community, which has been embraced by all serving and former board members. Townsend Enterprise Park was esta

blished by local churchmen and professional people, who recognised the need for such a venture as a means of creating new opportunities, stretching the imagination and promoting peace and reconciliation within the local community. Since it’s establishment, the company has steadily and quietly expanded and matured into the successful organisation it is today, as one of the top enterprise agencies in Northern Ireland. This collective ambition to create an enterprise park in this particular area, as a means of raising it’s profile and encouraging peace and reconciliation, really took off in 1987, when Phase One opened with 35,000 sq. The success of this venture became evident in 1995 when expansion became necessary and Phase Two of the Park was completed, accommodating a further 15-20 businesses and creating employment for a further 250 people. Today the success of Townsend Enterprise Park is highlighted in the fact that the business has an 85% occupancy rate, catering for 37 small/medium sized businesses which employ just under 300 people on the site.

Did you know there’s a river running underneath Belfast? 👀💧

The River Farset flows beneath much of the city today – but remarkably, there are still a small number of places where you can catch a glimpse of it, including right here at Townsend Enterprise Park.

And its connection to Belfast goes much deeper than you might think…

The name Belfast comes from the Irish Béal Feirste, traditionally associated with the mouth of the Farset and the sandbank ford where the Farset met the River Lagan.

A little piece of Belfast’s history, still flowing through Townsend today. 💙

Our heritage. Our future.

Did You Know? 💧

Before electricity powered Belfast, water did.

The River Farset once flowed through Townsend Street, providing the energy that helped fuel the city's rapid industrial growth. But as the river slowed, traditional water wheels became less effective.

That's where innovation changed everything.

At the Soho Foundry, on the site of today's Townsend Enterprise Park, engineers pioneered advanced water turbines capable of generating power even from slower-flowing water. Their breakthrough helped unlock new opportunities for industry, commerce and manufacturing—supporting Belfast's rise as one of the world's great industrial cities.

It's a powerful reminder that Townsend has always been a place where challenges were met with ingenuity.

From water power... to business power.

40 Weeks to 40 Years – celebrating the people, places and innovations that shaped Townsend Enterprise Park.

Did You Know? 🏭

Long before Townsend Enterprise Park became a thriving business community, this site was home to one of Belfast's most important engineering companies.

The Soho Foundry, founded by Robert Shipboy McAdam and his brother James, employed around 250 people and earned an international reputation for innovation. From Townsend Street, pioneering water turbines and engineering solutions were designed and exported across the world, helping to power industry far beyond Belfast.

It's a reminder that innovation has always been part of Townsend's story.

Today, that same spirit lives on as a place where businesses start, grow and thrive.

Our heritage. Our future.
