Welcoming Rocco Macdonald to the City Access Team.

7 years ago Rocco joined a local boxing gym, where our director Mark Skinner was a volunteer coach.

Even at that young age, Rocco’s commitment & talent shone through, where he is recognised today as one of the best young amateur boxers in his category, boxing for his Country with Boxing Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Rocco expressed he was keen to build a career while continuing to train and compete, and the City Access team are delighted to support both. 💪🏻🥊

Hard work, Consistency and the right mindset go a long way which Rocco brings all three.

Alongside supporting rocco with the flexibility he needs for training, City Access are proud to be sponsoring Rocco as he progresses in his Boxing journey.

We are all very much looking forward to seeing what’s ahead both inside and outside the ring for Rocco Macdonald 🖤💛

📣A new chapter for City Access📣

After 11 incredible years building City Access Scaffolding, co-founders Kirsty Allan and Jonathan Allan have stepped away following a successful management buyout.

The business is now owned and led by original founder Mark Skinner, alongside Ryan Scott and Ross Archibald.

What started in 2014 with big ambitions and very little capital has grown into a recognised and respected business — delivering projects across Scotland, built on strong relationships, high standards and an incredible team.

So many of our best ideas… our next moves… the big decisions — they didn’t happen in boardrooms. They happened over coffees. Over lunches. Just spending time together.

And it feels right that we’ve closed this chapter in exactly the same way — a final directors’ lunch, sat round the table at The Sun Inn on Friday.

We came as a team. And we genuinely disrupted the scaffolding industry — leaving it better than when we found it.

The business was built to scale and create opportunities for everyone involved. We are fortunate to have achieved an exit that not only leaves the business in a strong position, but has also been managed in a way that preserves the founders’ friendship — something rarely seen in business.

We’re hugely proud of what has been achieved over the past decade — especially the apprentices who have come through our doors, qualified, and now deliver the City Access standard every day.

The company moves forward in a strong position, with a clear leadership team and an exciting future ahead.

A huge thank you to our staff, clients and partners who have been part of the journey.

Here’s to the next chapter. 👏

Historic challenges need smart, modern solutions.

At Stirling Castle, access was needed to both the upper and lower roofs within the Lion’s Den — no small task on a protected historic structure.

We designed a large buttressed access scaffold capable of supporting a cantilevered hanging drop into both roof areas. A standard cantilever would have increased the first lift height and restricted access, so we took a different approach.

The result?
✔ Unrestricted access
✔ Minimal impact on the structure
✔ Exactly where HES needed it

Right solution. Right place. No compromise.

As we begin another year, we’re excited about what lies ahead and proud to see our team continue to grow and evolve.

We’re delighted to announce that City Access Scaffolding has successfully retained the Edinburgh Contract, continuing our role in providing scaffolding services at Edinburgh Castle and other historic sites across Edinburgh.

🏴🏰 Contract Continuation 🏴🏰

First awarded over four years ago, retaining this contract is a testament to the professionalism, dedication, and high standards of our team. Since our founding in 2014, City Access Scaffolding has aspired to work on iconic landmarks — with Edinburgh Castle always at the very top of that list.

These projects take us to some of the most iconic and historic places in Scotland, and we are incredibly proud to play our part in preserving and restoring the landmarks that define our heritage.

This continued partnership with Historic Environment Scotland marks another proud milestone for our business, and we’re excited to build on the strong relationship we’ve developed over the past four years.

We can’t wait to get started on the next phase.

From decades of uncertainty to a world-class cultural destination 🎶

We’re proud to be supporting the transformation of Edinburgh’s historic Royal High School into Scotland’s new National Centre for Music — a landmark project set to give this iconic building a vibrant future at the heart of the city.

City Access Scaffolding has been appointed to provide complex access solutions to the East and West wings of this iconic listed building by . Using a carefully designed combination of ties and buttressing, all approved by the conservation architect, we minimised impact on the structure while keeping the solution efficient and cost-effective for the client.

Large beam installations allowed uninterrupted access without loading the roof, while proprietary roofing and full shrink-wrap encapsulation provide weather protection and uplift control. Integrated lifting points aligned with the chimneys to support safe cope removal and restoration works.

Through early-stage 3D scaffold design modelling, we worked closely with Robertson Construction to review every detail well in advance, ensuring the scaffold perfectly matched the programme and scope of works.

🚀 New Apprentices Join the CAS Team!

We had an amazing response to our latest apprenticeship openings — as always, competition was tough! After a great round of applications, we’re excited to welcome James and Sonny as our newest recruits.

Both joined us on Monday, stepping into Peter’s role in the yard as he progresses out to site — a brilliant example of how careers can grow here at CAS.

All our apprentices spend their first 6 months in the yard learning the basics, getting to grips with manual handling, and picking up the trade lingo.

By the end of their first week, they should be able to pick out:
🔩 STANDARDS
🧱 BASE JACKS
🔧 BRACES
⚙️ SINGLES & DOUBLES
🪜 OMEGA HOP-UPS
🔩 and SWIVELS!

Everyone has to start somewhere — and we’re delighted that Sonny and James are starting their scaffolding journey with us.

They’ll be learning the ropes together under the guidance of George, Jay, and Willie — a top team to learn from!

Welcome to the team 👷‍♂️👏

📣We are looking for 2 new apprentices to join City!📣

City Access are offering an exciting opportunity for two individuals to join our team as Apprentice Scaffolders.

We offer support to our apprentices throughout their practical learning but we are particularly dedicated in offering a mentor style programme to guide our apprentices with life skills such as “managing finances,” “goal setting” and how and where to access help and/or services if needed.

As our current apprentices progress in their apprenticeship and become fully qualified we need to open the door for the next generation of working at height specialists. Over the course of 2025 we have a continued focus on bringing new recruits into our City Access training community.

If this opportunity sounds exciting, we would love to hear from you.

The successful candidate should be:

Between the ages of 17-20
Driven
Enthusiastic
Reliable
Well mannered
Open to learning & taking direction.

*Our apprentices start in the yard to learn the foundations and progress (in time) to working within a squad.

11 years of City Access Scaffolding.

Every project—no matter the size—has played its part in getting us to where we are today. Pride in our work has always been the foundation, and without it, we wouldn’t be here.

In the early days, the wins felt huge, but as you’ll see from these photos, they were far from the large-scale projects we deliver now.

We entered the Edinburgh scaffolding industry at a time when a shake-up was needed, and we’re proud to have been part of that change.

Looking at us today, our yard and our brand may appear polished—but these photos are a reminder of how it all began: with small jobs that set the wheels in motion, and a modest yard that allowed us to grow. 📈

Now, we stand with a strong management team who carry the same pride and commitment we’ve had since day one.

Grateful for the journey so far—and excited for what’s still ahead.

🏰 Preserving History With a Little Help From City Access – Linlithgow Palace 🛠️

Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots and a jewel in Scotland’s royal heritage, remains a popular destination for visitors from around the world. As with all historic buildings, it requires ongoing care to preserve its structure for future generations.

We were brought in to provide access scaffolding and crash deck protection to support remedial stonework. A key part of the brief: ensure the public could continue to safely access and enjoy the central courtyard during the works, without compromising on safety or conservation needs.

A standard crash deck with 2.5m overhead protection and ground supports was an option, but it would reduce space and obstruct views of the Palace courtyard. Instead, we engineered a new solution that ensures safety, preserves space in the busy courtyard, and maintains the ‘wow factor’ of the Palace’s stonework for visitors to enjoy.

As a result, we secured the full design contract alongside our scaffolding provision, working in partnership with to protect one of the country’s most iconic sites.

Proud to play a part in protecting Scotland’s heritage, the right solution makes all the difference.

🎬 Doune Castle – Where Heritage Meets Modern Access Solutions 🏰

Doune Castle has become a truly iconic filming location in Scotland — featuring in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Game of Thrones pilot (as Winterfell), and continuing to play a key role in Outlander.

We were brought in to provide access to both sides of the roof while keeping our base footprint to an absolute minimum — essential for preserving the castle’s historic character and avoiding disruption to future filming.

Our freestanding scaffold solution includes hoist capabilities, allowing safe lifting of stonework and reducing manual handling risks for the team on site.

We've enjoyed site visits planning a bespoke hanging access system for the front elevation, which will need to navigate around the turret and provide safe access to the main flagpole. These works are scheduled to take place once this season’s filming wraps up at the end of summer.

Proud to be part of a project that balances the demands of conservation, safety, and creative production. 🎥🔧
