We were delighted to host a private dinner in honour of His Excellency Periasamy Kumaran, High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, and Vishakha Yaduvanshi, Consul General of India, Manchester, at Uyare by Tharavadu in Leeds.

Following a full day of discussions focused on strengthening the relationship between Yorkshire, the wider North and India, the dinner provided an opportunity to continue those conversations in a more informal and personal setting.

It was a privilege to bring together senior representatives from business, education, local government and the wider community to discuss the opportunities ahead and the importance of building strong, long-term relationships between our regions and India.

With the UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement now in force and the Northern delegation preparing to travel to India in October, these conversations are particularly timely as we look to turn shared ambitions into meaningful opportunities for trade, investment, education and collaboration.

A sincere thank you to His Excellency Periasamy Kumaran and Vishakha Yaduvanshi for joining us, and to everyone who contributed to such a valuable evening.

Thank you also to the team at Uyare for providing such a fitting setting to close an important day focused on Yorkshire’s relationship with India.

Yesterday, we were pleased to be part of a full day of conversations focused on strengthening the relationship between the North and India.

The day included the Bradford Business Leaders Roundtable, bringing together businesses, education leaders and local government to have an open conversation about where genuine opportunities between Bradford and India might exist.

The discussion was particularly valuable because it was not about assuming we already have all the answers, but about asking the right questions.

Where is there genuine demand from India? What can Bradford’s businesses and institutions bring to the table? And what would encourage Indian businesses to come to Bradford, invest in the district and build long-term relationships with businesses and communities locally?

We then continued the day with the Culture, Media & Creative Industries India Roundtable at Leeds Conservatoire, bringing together organisations from across the North’s creative, cultural and education sectors.

Discussions covered film and television, music, live performance, production, creative education, digital media, talent and training, with a focus on identifying where there is genuine potential for collaboration with India.

It was also a privilege to hear from H.E. Periasamy Kumaran, High Commissioner of India to the UK, and Vishakha Yaduvanshi, Consul General of India, Manchester, whose perspectives added an important dimension to both conversations.

With the UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement now in force, there is significant interest in what comes next. Agreements can create the framework, but it is people, relationships and collaboration that turn those opportunities into something real.

A sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute to these conversations.

Today, we were pleased to attend the White Rose Great Northern India Trade Mission Reception in Leeds, bringing together senior leaders from across the North and India to discuss opportunities to strengthen UK–India trade, investment and collaboration.

The event opened with remarks from the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Periasamy Kumaran, followed by an insightful Mayors Session moderated by Stephen Crisp, Director Government Relations and Membership Services at the UK India Business Council.

The panel brought together:

- Vishakha Yaduvanshi, Consul General of India
- Nidhi Mani Tripathi, UK–India FTA Chief Negotiator
- Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire
- Oliver Coppard, Mayor of South Yorkshire
- David Skaith, Mayor of York & North Yorkshire

It was a valuable opportunity to hear from leaders across the region and India about the opportunities ahead, particularly around the UK–India Free Trade Agreement, regional growth, investment and strengthening connections between businesses.

As organisations committed to supporting businesses and promoting inclusive economic growth across the North, it was fantastic to be part of conversations focused on building stronger international relationships and creating new opportunities for businesses across our region.

Have Your Say on the Future of West Yorkshire!

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority is consulting on the final draft of its Spatial Development Framework (SDF), a shared plan that will help shape how growth, regeneration and development takes place across the region alongside future Mass Transit ambitions.

Earlier this year, the public was invited to share their views on the Strategic Development Framework, and that feedback has helped shape the next stage of the work. Now, there is another opportunity to have your say before the plan is submitted.

The SDF will help ensure that future homes, jobs, services and investment are planned in the right places, creating better-connected communities and supporting sustainable growth across West Yorkshire.

Your feedback can help ensure the plan is:
- Practical and deliverable
- Reflective of local needs and priorities
- Ready to support growth across West Yorkshire

Consultation closes: 23:59 on Sunday 27th September 2026

Have your say: https://www.yourvoice.westyorks-ca.gov.uk/SDFReg19

There is also a consultation webinar on Wednesday 9th September at 12:30pm, providing an opportunity to hear from representatives of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Mass Transit programme team and ask questions through a live Q&A.

Please note: This consultation focuses on the wider planning and development framework. It does not seek views on specific Mass Transit routes, route alignment, depots or park and ride sites.

A Landmark Agreement and a Region Ready to Lead

August has been a month of momentum the kind that builds quietly behind the scenes and then, all at once, becomes impossible to ignore.

The backdrop could not be more significant. On 15th July 2026, the UK-India Comprehensive Trade Agreement came into force, one of the biggest trade deals of modern times, opening up 99% of Indian goods to the UK market and 90% of UK goods to India, with projected annual gains of £25.5 billion in bilateral trade by 2040.

For the North of England, already buoyed by £20 billion in investment pledged by NatWest and a Government that has placed the Northern Growth Corridor at the centre of its economic strategy, the timing is everything. The question is not whether there is opportunity, it is who will be positioned to seize it. At NPH and YABA, our answer is unequivocal: we will make sure businesses from our communities are at the very front of that queue.

We were delighted to record an insightful podcast episode with Matthew Nowell from Bradford College, exploring how stronger collaboration between education and employers can help prepare the next generation for the world of work.

In this episode, Matthew talks us through Bradford College and his role, as well as the introduction of new Employer Boards and how they will help shape curriculum, placements and real-world experiences for students.

We also discuss T Level placements, creating meaningful work experience opportunities for employers, and how closer collaboration with Bradford's diverse business and creative community can help develop the skills businesses need.

This episode is particularly relevant if you're:

- An employer interested in shaping future talent
- Looking to offer placements or meaningful work experience
- Curious about T Levels and how they work in practice
- Keen to collaborate with local education providers

It's a great conversation about the importance of bringing education and industry closer together to create better opportunities for students and businesses across Bradford and beyond.
