UPDATE: Seaside Sewing Machines has moved! OK we are still in the same building as we were. But we've now got our own little workshop. Some may be aware that SSM and Brighton Sewing Centre have parted ways. This was an amicable move due to rising costs and we wish them well in their new location.
The new workshop means more space to work, so book your machine in for it's long overdue service!

SSM is officially on holiday now! We return to the workbench on 1st September.

Before going we had one last job, to clean up this Singer 15 and make it presentable. It was a challenge trying lacquer during a heatwave!

Pattern Challenge day.....something. Today we learn that ADHD doesn't mix well with regular updates.

Things went hectic as SSMHQ, as I'm away with the kids next week and I wanted to clear as much work as possible. However I still made time for the Francli Day Pack by

With the bag finally finished I have some observations to share. Ultimately I was working to a colour scheme and had some webbing already in my stash that fitted the scheme. I thought it would be easier than buying webbing from M&M and dyeing it to match. The webbing I had must be thinner and less stiff than that from M&M because it slips through the ladder locks and the straps always sit at maximum length. Also the hooks that hold the bag closed just keep falling away from the webbing loops allowing the bag to flap open.

HOWEVER the pattern itself is an absolute joy, and the instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I can highly recommend it for anyone looking for an every day bag to make.

So what does everyone think? Am I going home this week or do I get the chance to make something new?

(PS, the eagle eyed may notice I switched sewing machines. As can be expected I have a few, and the Singer 401 started to sound off so it's been added to the queue of machines awaiting service)

Pattern challenge day 2: A rare outing for my vintage Singer 401G. Yes, I can use a sewing machine and run a line of stitching, but I've never been much of an actual sewist.
I am challenging myself to make the Francli Day Pack to pick up some actual sewing skills. Maybe one day my wardrobe will be full of my own creations!
At the end of day 1 I had the front portion of the bag together and one strap under construction.

Brighton Sewing Centre made the mistake of going out for lunch today and leaving me alone with her machines 😬. I couldn't resist giving her Wheeler & Wilson no. 8 a bit of a clean. How much of this fluff is 150 years old?
