No Tricks… Just Treats! 🎃 A Week Of Great Work Across Sussex

Halloween’s nearly here, and while the trick-or-treaters are sorting out their costumes, the Shaws teams have been busy handing out treats of their own – new windows and doors for homes right across Brighton, Hove and Sussex. Here’s what we’ve been up to.

🏡 Front To Back: A Victorian Home, Transformed
Our star of the week is a classic red-brick Victorian terrace that’s had the full Shaws treatment, front to back.

At the front, new white vertical sliding sash windows fill both bays, upstairs and down. The traditional look the house was built with – now with modern double glazing and sashes that glide up and down with ease.

Round the back is where the real treat is. A brand-new kitchen extension opens onto the garden through two sets of anthracite grey bi-fold doors, meeting at the corner. Fold them back and the kitchen and patio become one big space – perfect for summer get-togethers. And for everyday use, there’s a handy door on each side of the corner, so you can pop out to the garden without opening the whole set.

From the inside, it’s floor-to-ceiling glass on two sides, with the herringbone floor running right up to the threshold. Big glass. Slim frames. Great view.

Finishing it all off: white French doors with a glazed toplight, plus new sash windows in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom – with obscure glass for privacy above the roll-top bath.

Darker Evenings? Time For A Front Door Upgrade
The clocks went back last weekend, so it’s darker earlier and our front doors are working harder. This week we fitted a rich dark red composite front door with decorative glazing and a glazed toplight above – the perfect partner for the original Victorian tiled path. Warm, secure and full of kerb appeal.

Heritage Looks, Modern Aluminium
Sleek black heritage-style aluminium windows and French doors on a bungalow, with reeded glass for privacy just where it’s needed. And on a barn conversion, a black heritage aluminium door is in – while the rest of the build takes shape around it. We’ll share the finished result!

A Balcony With A View
We also fitted a new glazed screen on a balcony – adding shelter and privacy while keeping all the light and the view.

Brighton’s Favourite Window… And 6 Sash Myths, Busted! 🪟

Walk down almost any street in Brighton and Hove and you’ll spot them,all, elegant vertical sliding sash windows, from Victorian terraces to grand bay fronts. So it’s no surprise they’ve kept the Shaws teams busy this week, with five sash projects completed across Brighton, Hove and Sussex.

A Week Of Sashes
Full bay windows replaced on classic Victorian terraces with traditional-style vertical sliders, complete with run-through horns – every opening measured individually and fitted as a perfectly matching set.
New sashes in kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms, some finished with natural timber linings inside for a warm, traditional feel.
And one bay we caught mid-install – old frames out, new sashes ready to go in.

We know replacing sash windows can feel like a big decision, especially on a period home. So let’s clear up a few of the things we hear most…

🔍 Sash Myth-Busters
Myth: “New sash windows will spoil the look of my period home.”
Truth: Today’s vertical sliders are designed around traditional proportions – slim meeting rails, Georgian bar options and period-style detailing. From the street, they look right at home.

Myth: “Sash windows are always draughty and rattly.”
Truth: That’s old, worn sashes talking. Modern vertical sliders are weather-sealed and double glazed, so you keep the classic style without the cold spots, rattles and whistling – just in time for winter.

Myth: “They’re heavy and always sticking.”
Truth: Modern balance systems mean the sashes glide up and down smoothly with one hand, and stay exactly where you leave them. (Watch our reel and see for yourself!)

Myth: “Upstairs sashes are a nightmare to clean.”
Truth: Not these! Our vertical sliders tilt inwards, so you can clean the outside of the glass safely from inside the house. No ladders, no window cleaner juggling.

Truth: Bays are one of our specialities. This week alone our teams fitted a number of them, with every section made to fit the angles of the bay.

Myth: “I’m in a conservation area, so I’m stuck with what I’ve got.”
Truth: Not necessarily. There are conservation-friendly sash designs available, and we’re happy to talk you through the options – subject to any local approvals.

When The Customer Says… “Can You Do The Inside Too?” 🏡

It’s been another busy week for the Shaws teams across Brighton, Hove and Sussex, and one of our favourite projects has just grown even bigger.

🔨 Grange Rest Nursing Home – The Story Continues
Regular followers will know we’ve been building a brand-new orangery and garden room at Grange Rest Nursing Home. The roof lantern is in, the windows are fitted, the floor is prepped – and the space is already filling with natural light.

And here’s the best bit… the client is so pleased with how it’s coming along that they’ve asked us to take on even more: painting and decorating, bespoke wall panelling and new internal flooring. The team have already made a start on the panelling, and it’s looking very smart indeed.

There’s no better compliment than a customer asking you to do more. Thank you, Grange Rest!

Heritage Charm. Aluminium Performance.
Slimline black aluminium heritage windows and French doors, complete with Georgian bars and reeded glass. That classic steel-look style, with all the thermal performance and security of a modern system – and it looks just as good from the inside.

Garden Access, Times Three
This home now has several new sets of white French doors with flush sashes and matching side panels. Bright, secure and opening straight out onto the patio.

Triple Track = Two-Thirds Open
On a brand-new rear extension, we’ve fitted an aluminium triple-track patio slider. Three panels run on three tracks, so two glide neatly behind the third – opening up two-thirds of the width, rather than half with a standard two-panel slider. Slim frames, huge panes of glass, and garden views before the landscaping has even started!

Light From Above
A new roof with a glazed roof lantern, set into this flat-roof extension. Instant daylight for the room below.

Classic White, Done Right
Crisp white casement windows, including top-opening lights for easy ventilation. Proof that a classic never goes out of style.

Cleared For Take-Off… Shaws Head to the Airfield! ✈️

If you’ve been following us, you’ll know there’s rarely such a thing as a “typical” Shaws job. One week it’s a new front door in Hove, the next, a glazed roof at Brighton College or new windows at the Brighton Centre.

This week, our commercial team has taken things to new heights…

👷 On Site At Blackbushe Airport
We’ve been on site at Blackbushe Airport, working alongside Gatwick Construction on a brand-new aviation building. Hard hats on, drawings out, every opening measured, checked, and double-checked before the install. On a project this size, millimetres really do matter.

What We’re Supplying & Fitting
- Smart Wall aluminium doors and screens – a thermally broken commercial system with PAS 24 and LPS 1175 security ratings
- Large fixed screens up to 5.5 metres wide
- Fire exit doors with concealed panic bars (BS EN 1125)
- Anti-finger-trap doors and level double-ramp thresholds
- Ventilated louvre panels for the plant rooms

Commercial Doesn’t Have To Mean Boring
The doors and screens are dual-colour – anthracite grey inside and a warm copper brown outside, so they look the part as well as doing the job. Proof that your windows and doors don’t have to match inside and out… even on an airfield!

On a working airfield, doors get serious use. Panic bars provide a fast, safe exit in an emergency, anti-finger-trap hinges protect hands, and level thresholds let staff wheel trolleys and equipment straight through.
