This is Elliðaey, one of the islands just off Heimaey in Vestmannaeyjar
You might know it from that photo of a single white house sitting on a green island in the middle of nowhere. It gets shared every so often as “the loneliest house in the world”, usually with some story attached to it. One of the more persistent ones is that Björk owns it. She doesn’t.
The house belongs to Elliðaeyjarfélagið and is one of a number of old hunting cabins dotted around the islands here.

That whole world is actually much more interesting than the internet story.

Vestmannaeyjar has 15 islands, as well as a fair number of smaller skerries and sea stacks. Heimaey is the big one and the only one people live on permanently, but several of the smaller islands have cabins like this, looked after by different families and local hunting associations.
People have gone out to these islands for generations to tend sheep, collect eggs and hunt puffins when the season allows. Puffins are caught with a háfur, a long pole with a net on the end, while they fly past the cliffs. It takes a fair bit of skill and a lot of patience, and these days the hunting season is tightly controlled and can be very short.

The cabins are pretty basic. No running water, no mains electricity. Rainwater is collected, generators are used if needed, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is decent phone signal or even internet in some of them by now. It has been a long time since I stayed in one.
My favourite island is Brandur. The cabin there sits on the far side of the island, away from Heimaey and the rest of Vestmannaeyjar. You look out from it and there is basically nothing in front of you apart from the Atlantic and the horizon. Hard to beat.
And since I’m already going on about this, one extra bit of island trivia: Surtsey has a cabin too. That one is used by scientists. Surtsey only appeared above the sea in 1963 and has been protected ever since, which makes it one of the few places in the world where scientists have been able to watch an ecosystem develop almost from the beginning.

Apparently there are five Ravens that hang out at Árbæjarsafnið. They are all called Ómar for some reason… I guess it’s hard to tell them apart so one name to rule them all… they seem pretty chill thar humans are around but bounce away if you get a bit too close… this one was having a sip and a chat by a puddle.
