A little piece of Hockney history.
This exhibition poster was created for David Hockney’s ‘Dessins et Gravures’ at Galerie Claude Bernard in Paris in 1975. Featuring one of Hockney’s characteristic portraits, it advertised an exhibition devoted to his drawings and prints at the gallery on Rue des Beaux-Arts. Over fifty years later, the poster has become collectable, with signed and numbered examples from an edition of 450, like this one, appearing at auction.
For the framing, we picked out the colours within the work: an apple-green frame against a velvet blue mount. It gives the piece a distinctly mid-century feel while keeping the delicacy of Hockney’s drawing at the centre.
A good example of how the surrounding colours can completely change the way you notice the colours within.
