If your building is still paying for a waking watch, this is worth five minutes.
On 30 September the Welsh Government opened the Wales Interim Measures Alarm Grant (WIMAG). It funds common fire alarm systems in residential buildings that need interim fire safety measures while remediation goes ahead, so blocks can stop relying on waking watch.
Who it's for:
- Buildings in Wales that are 11 metres or taller, multi-occupied and residential
- A current FRA or FRAEW, or a regulator's notice, showing interim measures are needed
- Applications from building owners, housing associations, local authorities or authorised managing agents (not individual leaseholders)
What it covers: alarm equipment, detection, control panels, wiring, installation and commissioning. Systems should normally meet BS 5839-1 Category L5, unless your fire risk assessor advises otherwise, and must be installed by a third-party accredited company.
Already installed one? Systems started or completed between 1 September 2021 and 30 September 2026 can be considered for retrospective funding.
Planning one? Apply first. The grant is paid once the system is commissioned, and installs started from 1 October without approval are only considered in exceptional cases. The application also asks for three quotes where possible, and we're happy to provide one.
We're currently delivering fire sprinklers and fire doors across three apartment blocks in Cardiff, so we know how interim measures and remediation have to fit together on a live building.
