Got the purple beauty out. Grabbed a yoga block for scale so I could send him a photo.

Funny how something looks "about right" until you put a real reference point next to it. Then you can see exactly what fits and what doesn't.

Same in business, I think. Your workload can feel manageable, your pricing fair, your week balanced… until you measure it against something concrete... maybe a time audit or a benchmark. Maybe a look at your own capacity.

That's proportion, really. Knowing what size something actually is, not just how it feels, so you can plan around reality instead of vibes.

What's the one thing in your business you've been eyeballing instead of measuring?

September always feels more like the new year to me than January does.

Maybe it's seeing all the back to school stuff in the shops (who doesn't love some new stationery!). Growing up in South Africa, our school year runs from January, so maybe it's a leftover from that. The summer slows right down, and when everyone lands back at their desks, the year seems to find a second gear.

It is a good time to look at what you are carrying into the last quarter of the year. Not the big exciting plans, we love those. I mean all the rest. Those jobs that crept onto your plate over the summer and stuck around. The things you do at 9pm on the sofa because the day ran out.

If your autumn is shaping up to be a busy one, and I hope it is, it might be worth asking yourself what you could hand over before it gets manic, so you go into the busy season with room to think, rather than already at capacity.

I have space for one more retainer from September. Ten hours a month, someone steady in your corner, picking up the bits that keep the whole thing moving.

I've been reading a lot of VA profiles lately.

A lot of them read like a conference brochure. Strategist. Specialist. Expert in eight different platforms, apparently.

I got to the end of some of them and still had no idea what the person actually does all day.

I've done it myself, by the way. Written a bio that sounded impressive and said almost nothing.

The clients who've stayed with me three and four years didn't hire me because I called myself an expert in anything. They hired me because their CRM was in a state and I sorted it. Then I built their newsletter. Then, at one point, moved their entire office.

Nobody has ever asked me what my specialism is. They ask me if I can start on Monday.

You don't need someone who's an expert at everything. You need someone who gets the job done, in decent time, to a good standard, and who doesn't need chasing for it.

That's the gig. It's less exciting than a list of specialisms, I'll give you that.

So if you've been putting off getting help because every profile you read made your eyes glaze over, that's fair enough. Ask a simpler question instead. Can this person do the work? Will they do it properly? Are they still going to be here in three years?

Last week, I was not an Operations and Admin Manager. By Monday I was.

A client needed maternity cover, and instead of leaving a gap for months, they handed me the reins. So this week has been two live recruitment roles, a newsletter built from scratch, and a discovery call this afternoon.

It is a lot. I am in my element.

None of it is really about the tasks though. It is about being someone a business can hand the keys to and trust to keep the place running. That is what years of this buys you. You walk into the deep end and you swim.

If there is a role in your business you have been calling too big to hand over, it might be worth a second look.

What would you finally get to focus on if someone could step in and hold it together?

A client came to me with a big idea but she had no one behind her.

She was absolutely flying. New enquiries coming in, a waiting list on the go, and she was itching to get going.

The only problem was that all of it ran through her. Every email, every booking, every follow-up. A one-woman operation trying to move at the speed of a team.

So we sat down and I got under the bonnet. I worked out which parts only she could do, and which she had been carrying for no good reason. Then I picked those up. The chasing, the coordinating, the systems that needed building, the follow-ups that turn a maybe into a yes.

Two weeks in, she told me she had finally spent a whole day on the thing she started the business to do.

That is the work I love. Giving someone with a big idea the room to chase it, by taking the rest off their desk. It looks different for every client, but underneath it is the same job. You bring the vision, I keep everything around it moving.

What would you finally get to focus on if the day to day was handled?

The job people ask me for most is a flyer.

A flyer for an event. A price list. A little leaflet to leave on a counter. Something that looks tidy and nicely done.

And most of the time, they could make it themselves. They have Canva, but they lose HOURS to it fighting with a template that's nearly right, but not quite... And then sending me an SOS when their day runs out.

So I've finally done it - I'm launching the Canva Crash Course. Download it, pick the bits you need, ignore the bits you don't.

It is £12.50. It will not make you a designer, nor isthat the point. It gets you to good enough, so you can make the flyer and get on with your real work.

There is a thing I see a lot with VAs.

Everyone is suddenly an expert. In everything. Funnels, systems, strategy, ten different tools, all on one profile.

And I get the temptation. It feels safer to sound like you can do it all. But here is what I actually believe, after nearly four years of this and a lot longer in admin before it.

You do not need to be an expert in everything. You need to get the job done, well, and on time.

I have picked up a wide range of skills over the years, across a lot of industries. That does not make me an expert in all of them. It makes me useful. Adaptable. Someone who can turn her hand to what the week needs.

Give me a steady pair of hands over a profile full of buzzwords.

I have a bit of space from September for one more retainer, if that is the kind of support you have been looking for.

What does a VA actually do? Depends on the week.

Some weeks it is your website, or a process that needs sorting out. This week it is a client’s office and a lot of deciding where things go.

The task is never really the point. It is knowing your person well enough to see what needs doing, then getting on with it.

What would you hand over first if you had a spare pair of hands this week?

Today I am sitting in a graduation hall watching my daughter collect her degree, and I am not checking my phone once. My son is home too, off the cruise ships for the first time in months. I have been thinking about how quickly it all goes. They were small. Then they were not.

Anyway, back to my business point, because there is one.

July/August is slow for most of us. Everyone is away, replies take days, nothing moves and it's tempting to treat that as dead time and just coast into September.

So I am being plain about it. I have 10 hours a month free from September, and I am looking for one retainer client to fill it. So whether you need a hand managing your day-to-day admin, emails, website updates or whatever you need to be done for that matter.

September is one of those 'magic' months when everything starts again. If you're using the quiet time as an opportunity to 'fix' things, message me and we will have a proper conversation about what you actually need.

I'm South African. Sunshine is in my DNA.

So the last few weeks have been doing something good for my soul. Bare feet on the floor. Walking out the door without even thinking about a coat. Wearing actual summer clothes like you mean it.

We don't get enough of this. We really don't.

And I think small business owners especially are terrible at letting themselves have it. There's always something. An email to send or a thing to chase. There always seems to be a reason not to properly switch off.

Your business can keep ticking while you're actually outside enjoying the summer. That's not a luxury, that's just good sense.
