Cavendish Philatelic Auctions

Cavendish Philatelic Auctions Philatelic Auction House A large permanent auction room with offices was then leased in central Derby, and the sales in other cities were curtailed. J.G.-T.

In 1952, Cavendish's 'Auction No.1' was held in the Midland Railway Institute in Derby, with the Company's founder Geoffrey Manton (who was also owner of the Derby Stamp Shop at that time) on the rostrum. Over the next 30 years Geoff's easy-going and entertaining auction style attracted increasing numbers of devoted buyers and sellers to Cavendish's regular monthly public Stamp Auctions. Sales wer

e held in many different cities, usually in large hotels, and many people still speak of those sales (held in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby & elsewhere) with great affection. By 1979, the continuing success of the Cavendish auctions, enabled Geoff Manton to sell the Derby Stamp Shop, in order to concentrate his energies exclusively on the auction business. In 1982 Geoff Manton 'retired', but he continued to work regularly for Cavendish as their Senior Consultant right through the six years of Frank Laycock's ownership of the business, until he in turn sold the Company in 1988 to James Grimwood-Taylor.

'JGT', as he is known to many clients and colleagues (who was born and brought up in Derby), had - by 1988 - gained 10 years of experience as an international expert in Stamps & Postal History, working with a major philatelic firm in London. He was more than happy to take over the company that had been founded by his mentor Geoff Manton. has piloted the company's expansion into overseas markets, where it is now one of the world's leading auction houses. He has been fortunate to gather a team of enthusiastic people around him (mostly keen and expert collectors themselves) to maintain Cavendish's high standards.

Coming up in our next auction – 3, 4 & 5 March 2026 at 11:00am in Derby

➡️ Lot 2041
MISSENT TO RUSSIA - QV 6d MAUVE ON COVER TO "RABAT, MOROCCO" BUT SENT TO MOSCOW!; Extraordinary 13 Aug. 1867 env. (minor creasing) from Jersey in the Channel Islands to a traveller care of the “[British] Vice Consul, Rabat, Morocco… Via Gibraltar” correctly prepaid with a G.B. 6d Mauve (pl.6) tied by a very fine “JERSEY/409” Duplex with red London “PD” & 15 Aug. backstamp. Inexplicably, it was sent from London to Aachen instead of to Gibraltar (via Falmouth or Southampton) and so was Missent to Moscow (someone must have misread “Morocco” as “Moscow” although it is very clearly written). There is a blue 2-ring “AUS ENGLAND PER AACHEN/FRANCO” cds (16 Aug.) on the front and several Moscow Julian calendar backstamps (20 Aug. and 14/15 Sept. in the British/Gregorian calendar) as well as a final Prussian “EYDTKUHNEN/BROMBERG” railway T.P.O. ds (17 Sept.). The blue crayon “M[?]7” was a Russian postage due charge; at this time the ¼oz rate to Tangier was 6d, but the rate to Russia was 1s-2d. There are Russian and German manuscript endorsements on the front (“Not to be found” in German and “Morocco”; plus “Mapok” and “Try[?] Vice Consul, Arbat” both in Russian). [Arbat is a district of Moscow]. The final part of the journey must have been from the Prussian T.P.O. to Gibraltar via France and Spain. A mystery yet to be solved entirely, but very probably a unique 19th century Missent multi-national cover. Exhibition Quality.
Estimate: £300
