Plain rubber sheet works fine until you put it under real bolt load. Then it stretches, creeps, and eventually fails.

Insertion rubber has a cotton or nylon fabric layer through the body of the sheet. That stops it stretching. It won't creep, won't extrude, won't take a set under compression. For pump gaskets, flanged joints, and compressor mounts, it's not the premium option — it's just the correct one.

O-rings fail for three reasons more than any other.

Wrong material - Nitrile handles oils and fuels well but degrades quickly in certain chemicals and elevated temperatures. Specifying the wrong compound — even for the same application environment — shortens seal life dramatically.

Wrong size - O-rings work by compression. Too much squeeze damages the ring; too little and it doesn't seal. Groove dimensions, cross-section, and stretch percentage all matter. Running to a nominal size without checking the tolerance is one of the most common mistakes in maintenance specification.

Wrong pressure rating - Standard O-rings are not rated for high-dynamic or high-pressure applications. The wrong specification in a hydraulic system doesn't just fail — it fails fast and unpredictably.
