A Year in the Cottage Garden is the story of a Gloucestershire garden's rebirth, co-authored by the woman who envisioned it, Sue O'Neil, and the head gardener who helped it flourish, Joff Elphick.

A neglected acre in an isolated Cotswolds spot, a self-confessed non-gardener with an iPad, and a professional gardener with an eye for rare snails. The story behind A Year in the Cottage Garden could begin like a country house mystery. Instead, it forms the foundation of a thoroughly modern and deeply personal book charting the evolution of a very special garden.

The book is available on the Genus gardenwear website. https://www.genus.gs/collections/tools-accessories/products/a-year-in-a-cottage-garden

Created by owner Sue O’Neil, and head gardener and garden writer Joff Elphick, Field Cottage has grown into a garden shaped by skill, patience and curiosity. A Year in a Cottage Garden gathers twelve months of Joff's weekly blogs, entitled In the Genus Garden, revealing the work, discoveries and s...

Alden and Patterson, coming to Waldringfield, 21 March.

I wrote this blog almost three years ago and somehow, it seems even more relevant now than it did then.

Profit margins - it's what we're all in business for - not necessarily to get filthy rich, but to be able to hire the best staff, keep machinery in good nick and just feel proud of what we've achieved.

Apparently there's even more rain on the way this week, so why not have a read of this blog and see if there are any ways that you could tweak your work habits in order improve your profit margin.

My top two recommendations would be to outsource garden design (to free up some mental bandwidth as well as some time). And invest in the services of someone like Neville Stein Horticultural Business Consultant who has this incredible ability to identify opportunities for you to improve your profit margins in the short, mid and long term.

I will be speaking at the 27th Education Seminar hosted by Manor View & Perennial Farm in Maryland, USA, this coming February 2026.

This isn’t just another speaking engagement—it’s a recongition of the power of international cooperation (and the strong networks developed via Pershore College of Horticulture) and the shared pursuit of excellence in horticulture and business. As someone who’s worked across the UK and internationally, I’ve always believed that the best ideas don’t respect borders. Whether it’s management, sustainable practices, or education, there’s so much we can learn from one another.

In my sessions, I’ll be sharing insights on:
✅ “You Can’t Manage What You Don’t Measure” – a practical look at understanding and tracking costs in landscaping
✅ “Current Trends in UK Garden Design” – bringing a fresh, cross-Atlantic perspective to American audiences

This opportunity reinforces why I do what I do: to bridge knowledge across markets, to learn from global peers, and to help businesses wherever they are to grow smarter and more sustainably.

I'm looking forward to connecting with fellow professionals in the US and continuing to champion knowledge without borders.

Message from my client, Genus Gardenwear, ....

Just one day left to order befre Christmas. Looking for Christmas gift ideas? We know our gear is top-end – built to last a lifetime for head gardeners and serious pros who live in their wellies. (And we’re chuffed to bits that so many of you do!). Here’s a thought… Christmas is coming up faster than bindweed in a border!

Why not pop Genus Gardenwear on your list for Santa? Or, even better, nudge that someone special (partner, mum, dad, friend who’s tired of you smelling of compost…) in our direction. Imagine on Christmas morning unwrapping those unbelievably comfy trousers that make a 10-hour potting session feel like a breeze. It’s the kind of gift that says: “You’re a proper gardener, and you deserve proper kit.” No more ‘novelty’ trowel sets. This is for keeps.

To order visit www.genus.gs - hurry as the last ordering date for Christmas is December 18th. hashtag

Last Friday we enjoyed a live chat on Substack where we chatted about lots of our favourite gift ideas, ahead of Christmas. We had so many brilliant suggestions and we agreed to turn all your ideas into a blog. Therefore, we've created The Common Farm Flowers Gift Guide!

You can read the full list of ideas on our latest Substack post - it's free for everyone to see (as is the live chat from the week before!)
