🎃 Happy Halloween! Transport Horror Story #3: the phantom driver

21:32. A coach driver running out of hours pulls his card. The coach keeps going, with no card in, until 22:50.

The operator said another driver had met the coach and taken over. But that driver never shows up in the vehicle unit data, and the coach barely stopped: card out and moving again in under 60 seconds.

The Traffic Commissioner revoked the licence and banned the owner, who was also the transport manager, for 10 years.

Most operators will never see a case like this. But the gaps behind it – driver changes nobody checks, data nobody reads – are exactly what our PSV compliance audits are designed to find, before a traffic examiner does.

🎃 Transport Horror Story #2: the lorry that rested while it drove

The tachograph said the driver was on a rest. The lorry was on the move.

A magnet on the tachograph sender records driving as rest. DVSA examiners who found one in Kent warned it could also knock out the speedometer, ABS and speed limiter.

Not every horror story needs a magnet, though. Last November, a haulier in the East of England lost its O licence after DVSA found driver cards that weren't downloaded and thousands of kilometres of unaccounted mileage. The transport manager lost his repute too, even though he'd resigned before the inquiry.

🎃 Transport Horror Story #1: the bridge on our doorstep

Harlaxton Road railway bridge in Grantham, just down the road from our office, was hit by vehicles 18 times in a single year. One strike caused £423,000 of damage and 59 hours of train delays.

Across Britain there's a bridge strike every five hours, and October is the worst month of all – almost 10 a day.

For operators, the cost doesn't stop at the repair. Traffic commissioners can take action against your O licence, and drivers can lose their vocational entitlement.
