Careers in high-hazard industries don’t start and end in a classroom. They’re built over time, through real experience, real responsibility and the right support.

Apprenticeships play a vital role in helping our sector address some of its biggest challenges:
an ageing workforce, evolving skills requirements and the need to pass on critical operational knowledge safely and effectively.

At Reynolds Training, our apprenticeship approach is designed around real-world competence, combining structured learning at our Technical Training Centre with hands-on experience in live operational environments. It’s about developing people who understand safety, process and risk not just in theory, but in practice.

This matters now more than ever.

As energy transition accelerates and regulation increases, the industry needs new talent with the skills, behaviours and confidence to operate safely in complex environments.

That’s why TSA Careers Week is so important, highlighting the pathways, opportunities and long-term careers available across the tank storage and wider high-hazard sector.

Because investing in people isn’t optional.
It’s how we protect the future of the industry.

As part of , it’s a good moment to ask a bigger question:

As technology accelerates and the workforce changes, how do we make sure competence keeps pace in high-hazard industries?

In a sector shaped by digitalisation, energy transition and generational change, training can’t be one-dimensional. Digital tools matter. Real-world experience matters. And blending the two is where safe, sustainable careers are built.

In this article, John Reynolds explores how technology can strengthen - not dilute - the culture of competence and why careers in our sector must be structured, progressive and grounded in real operational experience.

Earlier this month, teams from the British Pipeline Agency Limited (BPA) completed a closed IOSH Approved Emergency Response Training course at our Technical Training Centre.

Delivered over two immersive and interactive days, the programme went beyond theory and into real-world application - combining regulatory context with live, scenario-based exercises designed to reflect the realities of emergency response in high-hazard environments.

From loss-of-containment scenarios to escalation management and regulator engagement, the course mirrored how incidents actually unfold - and the decisions that matter when pressure is high.

You can read more about BPA’s experience here:

Because effective emergency response isn’t about ticking a box. It’s about preparing people to act, communicate and lead when it counts.
