πŸ’œ CARER’S ALLOWANCE – WHAT AM I ENTITLED TO? πŸ’œ

Are you supporting a family member, friend or loved one on a regular basis? You may not think of yourself as a carer, but you could be providing valuable support every day.

Many people are unsure what financial help and support may be available to them, including Carer’s Allowance.

Eligibility can depend on a number of factors, and understanding what you may be entitled to can sometimes feel confusing.

For those living in Hertfordshire, there is information and support available, including helpful factsheets explaining benefits and support for carers in more detail.

We have written a new blog looking at:

πŸ’œ What Carer’s Allowance is
πŸ’œ Who may be eligible
πŸ’œ Other support that may be available
πŸ’œ Where Hertfordshire carers can find further information and advice

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we know that supporting an older loved one can bring many responsibilities. Whilst we provide non-personal home help and companionship, we also believe it is important to share useful information that may help families and carers find the support they need.

🧠 What Memory Changes Are Actually Normal After 60?

Many people worry when they misplace their keys, forget a name, or walk into a room and can't remember why they went there.

The truth? Occasional forgetfulness is often a normal part of ageing. Research from the National Institute on Aging explains that as we get older, it may take longer to recall information, remember names, or learn new things. These changes are usually considered age-related forgetfulness, not dementia.

βœ… Forgetting where you put your glasses, then finding them later is usually normal.

βœ… Taking a little longer to remember someone's name is usually normal.

βœ… Occasionally forgetting to pay a bill is often normal.

The concern arises when memory problems begin interfering with everyday life. Examples include repeatedly asking the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, struggling to manage normal daily tasks, or becoming confused about time and place.

Interestingly, memory can also be affected by factors that have nothing to do with dementia, including:

β€’ Poor sleep
β€’ Stress and anxiety
β€’ Depression
β€’ Certain medications
β€’ Menopause
β€’ Some medical conditions

The good news? Research suggests that staying physically active, socially connected, learning new skills, getting enough sleep, and managing conditions such as high blood pressure may help support brain health as we age.

β˜€οΈπŸŒ‘οΈ HEATWAVE HEALTH TIP: DON'T FORGET ABOUT MEDICATION STORAGE πŸŒ‘οΈβ˜€οΈ

When the weather gets hot, most of us remember to drink more water and stay out of the midday sun. But did you know that high temperatures can also affect some medications?

Many medicines are designed to be stored below certain temperatures, and prolonged exposure to heat, direct sunlight, or hot environments such as conservatories and parked cars may affect how well they work.

βœ… Keep medicines in a cool, dry place
βœ… Store them away from direct sunlight and heat sources
βœ… Leave medicines in their original packaging whenever possible
βœ… Check whether any medications need to be kept in the refrigerator
βœ… Never leave medicines in a parked car, even for a short time

It's also worth checking regularly for any signs that medication may have been affected by the heat. If tablets, capsules, creams, or liquids appear melted, discoloured, leaking, cloudy, or otherwise unusual, speak to a pharmacist before using them.

Heatwaves can be particularly challenging for older people and those with long-term health conditions. If you're supporting an elderly relative, friend, or neighbour, a quick check that they're staying cool, hydrated, and storing their medications correctly can make a real difference.

πŸ’§ Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day
🏑 Keep living spaces as cool as possible
πŸ‘΅ Check in on older family members and neighbours
πŸ’Š Ensure medicines are being stored according to the instructions provided

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we're committed to promoting the wellbeing and safety of older people in our communities, especially during periods of extreme weather.

Stay safe, stay cool, and look after one another. πŸ’›

🏑 When is the right time to start home help for an older loved one?

Many people wait until daily tasks become difficult or a health crisis occurs. But research suggests that introducing support earlier can help people stay independent for longer. A major 2024 review published in The BMJ found that community-based interventions can help older adults maintain independence and continue living at home, while research into early frailty support has shown benefits from intervening before needs become more significant. Sources: BMJ (2024), HomeHealth Trial (The Lancet, 2023).

Home support is not about taking over. It's about providing the right level of assistance with everyday tasks such as housekeeping, meal preparation, shopping, companionship, and mobility support, while encouraging people to remain active and involved in their own routines.

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we understand that no two people are the same. That's why we tailor our support around each individual's wants, needs, interests and lifestyle. Our experienced local team is passionate about advocating for independent living, empowering older adults to remain in control of their lives while receiving just the right amount of support.

βœ… The best time to explore support is often when: β€’ Everyday tasks are becoming more tiring
β€’ Confidence is starting to decline
β€’ Family members are taking on increasing caring responsibilities
β€’ Small changes could prevent bigger problems later

Starting support early isn't giving up independence. In many cases, it's the best way to protect it. ❀️

β˜€οΈ Going on holiday? We'll help make sure your loved one isn't home alone. πŸ’œ

A holiday should be a time to relax and rechargeβ€”not to spend every day worrying about how Mum, Dad, or another loved one is managing at home.

If you have a holiday planned but are concerned about leaving someone without support, Nannies 4 Grannies can provide a tailored service to give you peace of mind while you're away.

🏑 Every visit lasts at least one hour, giving your loved one time for meaningful companionship as well as a helping hand with everyday tasks. Whether it's sharing a cup of tea and a chat, preparing a light meal, helping around the home, or simply checking that everything is okay, we're here to help.

πŸ’œ Looking After Our Community πŸ’œ

At Nannies 4 Grannies, we understand that scams and fraud are becoming increasingly common and can be worrying for both older adults and their families. We believe that raising awareness and sharing helpful information is one small way we can support our community and help keep people safe.

If you think you may have been affected by a scam, or if something simply doesn't feel right, it may be worth taking a few simple steps:

βœ… Contact your bank if you notice any unusual transactions
βœ… Change passwords, particularly for email and online banking accounts
βœ… Check your credit report for any unexpected activity
βœ… Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails or text messages asking for personal information
βœ… Speak to a trusted family member, friend or professional if you're unsure

For those concerned about identity fraud, Cifas Protective Registration offers an additional layer of protection by requesting extra checks when applications are made in your name. There is currently a fee of Β£30 for two years' protection.

Useful sources of advice and support:

πŸ”Ή Cifas: https://www.cifas.org.uk
πŸ”Ή JustMe App: https://www.just-me.uk
πŸ”Ή Action Fraud: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk

Please remember that scams can affect anyone. There is never any shame in asking for advice or support. By looking out for ourselves and each other, we can help create a safer community for everyone.
