When planning feels hard, pause here

If planning your year feels a lot harder than it should, pushing through isn't the answer.

It’s usually a signal, not a flaw.

When things haven’t gone to plan, or your business has changed, confidence takes a hit. Decisions feel loaded, and everything starts to feel high-stakes.

At that point, planning harder doesn’t help.
Reconnecting with purpose does.

A clear ‘Why’ reduces mental noise. It gives you an internal filter so you’re not weighing every option from scratch.

If you’re finding yourself stuck in indecision this January, the problem probably isn’t your plan. It’s that the foundation underneath it needs attention.

Most business owners know they’re supposed to have a ‘Why’.
You’ve read the book, heard people talk about it, and you might even have it written down somewhere.

And yet you still feel stuck, scattered, or unsure what you should actually be aiming for.

That’s because a Why only works when it’s active.

A useful Why:
* Guides decisions when things feel unclear
* Helps you say no without guilt
* Shapes the kind of clients you attract and keep

If your ‘Why’ isn’t doing those things, it’s probably sitting at the level of words, not behaviour.

A simple check-in for January, ask yourself:
Is my ‘Why’ actively influencing how I plan, prioritise and lead; or is it just something I “have”?

If you want to plan and execute effectively this year, this matters more than most people realise.

January plans often fail not because people lack discipline or ambition, but because they’re built on shaky foundations.

When your ‘Why’ isn’t clear or current:
Decisions take longer
Priorities blur
Ex*****on feels heavier than it should

You can have the best plan in the world, but if you’re not anchored in why you’re doing the work and who it’s really for, you’ll spend the year second-guessing yourself.

Your 'Why' isn’t a slogan. It’s the internal reference point that helps you choose, focus and follow through.

And just like that, we’re in January 2026. For a lot of business owners, January comes with an unspoken expectation: fresh diary, fresh goals, fresh you.

And thrilled to have combined it by attending two fantastic International Women's Day events this year!

I had the pleasure of meeting some truly amazing women and listening to their inspiring stories.

Every woman has a unique and powerful story to tell, and it never fails to amaze me how they remain positive and dedicated to their passions despite their busy personal and work schedules.

One particular woman who has completely captured my heart is the incomparable Devya Athwal of Athwal Resourcing.

Devya is a superwoman, balancing her roles as a devoted mother, wife, daughter, and sister with running a successful business and on the side being a school governor and non-executive director.

She started her career as an accountant and has continuously honed her skills and expertise along the way.

As a specialized finance recruiter, qualified coach, and NLP master practitioner, Devya uses her exceptional skills to guide and empower her clients and help them achieve their career dreams.

I was delighted to hear that Devya was nominated for and won the prestigious 2022 Global Women's Contribution to Recruitment award last year!

She truly deserves this recognition for her tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to empowering both women and men in the workplace.

Devya is too humble to boast about her award, but I caught up with her and cornered her to be this week’s guest on the Boardroom Buddies Podcast.
