If your laptop died right now, what would you lose? 💻

The simplest way to get it right is the 3-2-1 rule:
3️⃣ copies of your data: the original plus two backups
2️⃣ types of storage, such as an external drive and the cloud
1️⃣ copy kept off site or in the cloud, safe from fire, flood or theft

Phishing emails are getting harder to spot. They use real logos, familiar layouts and wording that sounds just like the genuine thing. But there are almost always clues if you know where to look.

For businesses, be especially careful with emails about changed bank details. Always confirm by phone, using a number you already have, before paying anything.

The safest habit of all is to ignore the link and go to the website or app yourself. If there’s a genuine problem, you’ll see it when you sign in.

Is your password your dog’s name? Your kid’s birthday? Your favourite football team followed by 123? 🐶

If it’s something people could find out about you, or it’s short and predictable, it’s much easier to guess than you’d think.

There are three simple habits that make a big difference. First, use three random words: a long password that’s easy for you to remember and hard for anyone else to guess. Second, let a password manager create and store unique passwords for you, so you don’t have to remember them all. Third, never reuse a password. If one account is breached, every other account sharing that password is at risk too.

Your password is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Maybe too much. 🔐

If someone gets hold of it, through a data breach, a phishing email or a login you’ve reused elsewhere, and it’s the only thing protecting your account, they’re in.

That’s where multi-factor authentication (MFA) comes in. It adds a second check after your password, like a code from an authenticator app or a text message, so a stolen password alone won’t get anyone through the door.

If you haven’t turned it on yet, start with Microsoft 365, your email and your banking. An authenticator app is the stronger choice, but a text code is still far better than a password on its own.

Bloody updates again! 🤦‍♂️

“Why the hell do I need to keep updating everything?”

Windows wants an update.
Your phone wants an update.
Chrome wants an update.
Teams wants an update.

Even the bloody printer probably wants one, although it still won’t print afterwards.

I know I know. Updates are annoying.

But there’s a reason they keep coming.

Updates don’t just give you new features. They fix security weaknesses that cyber criminals can use to get into your systems.

And once a security flaw becomes known, leaving your device unpatched is a bit like discovering your back door doesn’t lock and thinking:

“I’ll sort that out next month.”

So yes, updates are a pain in the backside.

But ransomware is considerably more annoying.

Keep your devices updated. And if you run a business, don’t just *hope* your staff are doing it.

Make sure someone is actually checking.

What actually is cyber awareness training… and why does your business need it?

Put simply, it’s teaching your staff how to spot the things that could put your business at risk.

Things like:

• A supplier suddenly asking you to pay into a different bank account
• A dodgy attachment
• Someone pretending to be the boss asking for an urgent payment
• AI-generated emails that look frighteningly genuine

Because you can spend thousands protecting your IT, but criminals know there’s often an easier way in…

Your people.

Good cyber awareness training isn’t about turning everyone into cyber security experts.

It’s about creating that little voice in their head that says:

“Hang on… something doesn’t look right here.”

Then making sure they know what to do next.
