Uncalibrated ADAS drives like a zombie, with its eyes open and seeing nothing.

Happy Halloween from the calibration bay, where two of the team have clearly been at it too long.

The camera behind your windscreen and the radar behind the grille are aimed to millimetre tolerances, so a new screen, a kerb or some bodywork can knock them out without a single warning on the dash. We calibrate in house, static and dynamic, and prove it on a road test.

The Mercedes was fine, but the technicians are still under observation.

The person who tests your car's MOT has to pass an assessment of their own every year.

It's how testers keep testing on behalf of the DVSA, and ours have tested cars and light commercials here since 2011. On the brake rollers each wheel's braking is measured, and the test ends in a pass or a fail with any minor defects and advisories.

The clocks go back on Sunday, so Monday's drive home is the first one in the dark.

A blown bulb is almost impossible to spot from the driver's seat, and the aim is the part nobody checks at all, because it drifts over time and moves whenever a unit is replaced or the boot is loaded. Too high dazzles oncoming traffic and too low loses the road, which matters most on the unlit lanes round here.

Bulbs, lenses and aim are all on our health check, and we set the aim on the beam setter in the MOT bay rather than by eye.

Cold oil is thick oil, and a frosty start is the hardest work an engine does all day.

For the first few seconds the oil is still down in the sump rather than up on the bearings, and short winter runs make it worse because the engine never gets warm enough to burn off the moisture and fuel that collect in it.

Plenty of workshops turn a motorhome away, and it's usually the doorway that decides it.

Ours was built the other way round, with a six and a half metre ramp and the door and roof height to reach it, so a motorhome or long wheelbase van goes up on the ramp rather than waiting on the yard.

Half of a worn tyre is on the side nobody looks at.

The first one here still has around two and a half millimetres on the outside, but run a hand to the inside edge and it's down to the canvas, and the second is worn bald in the same place. That pattern is nearly always alignment, and it won't correct itself.

So every health check here covers the full width of all four tyres, and we check the alignment before a new tyre goes on, because otherwise you end up paying for the same tyre twice.
