MOST BUILDINGS FAILTO MEET PERFORMANCE TARGETS BEFORE THEY ARE EVEN DESIGNED.
Energy strategies are often treated as a tick-box exercise —
added at the end of the process, just before planning.
By then, it’s already too late.
The building form, orientation and façade are fixed, and the opportunity to reduce energy demand through design is lost.
A proper approach follows the Energy Hierarchy:
Be Lean → Be Clean → Be Green → Be Seen
But in reality, most projects jump straight to:
➡️ PV panels
➡️ Heat pumps
➡️ System upgrades
…while completely skipping passive design.
We still see:
❌ Single-aspect flats
❌ Bedrooms without cross ventilation
❌ Overheating ignored
With Approved Document O and climate change, this is no longer acceptable.
Energy Strategy must be defined at PRE-DESIGN stage.
Not after planning.
Not as a compliance exercise.
This is not just about UK regulations.
It is the foundation for:
✔ Low energy buildings
✔ Zero carbon design
✔ Climate-responsive architecture
Applicable in the UK — and globally.
At ECOstudio XV, we work with design teams early to optimise building performance from the start.
👉 Engage early. Avoid costly redesigns later.
