The mineral 'beryl' comes in many colours, such as blue aquamarine, pink morganite, yellow heliodor, and the word 'emerald' specifically refers to the intense green variety of beryl. All beryls are beryllium aluminium silicate, and the beautiful green colour of beryl is primarily caused by colour-causing impurities ('chromophores') of chromium and vanadium. When emeralds were first discovered in Africa, there was some speculation that chromium and vanadium might give rise to different shades of green, but it is now believed that the underlying green colours of vanadium and chromium are indistinguishable to the naked eye and that the 'overtones' of bluishness or yellowishness seen in many emeralds are due to impurities of iron.
