The people who best understand the effort your team members put in are often their colleagues but how many businesses do you know that have a peer recognition programme?

When a colleague recognises your work, it feels chosen rather than obligatory.

That's why peer recognition lands differently - and why it's worth building into your small business culture.

⚽🌍 The FIFA Men's World Cup is almost here – is your workplace ready?

I love a major sporting event and I'm lucky enough to work for myself so can take time off to watch but what about the impact of a major sporting event like the World Cup on employers? It doesn't just dominate the headlines – it often has an impact in the workplace too.

You may see:

📅 An increase in annual leave requests
⏰ Requests for flexible working around match times
📺 Employees wanting to keep up with games during the working day
💬 Plenty of friendly office banter and rivalry
🤒 The occasional "unexpected" absence after a late-night match

Most employees act responsibly, but events like the World Cup, Wimbledon, Test Matches etc are a good reminder for employers to review their policies and think ahead.

A few practical steps can make a big difference:
✅ Encourage employees to submit leave requests as early as possible
✅ Apply holiday and absence procedures fairly and consistently
✅ Consider temporary flexibility where operationally possible
✅ Ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained
✅ Set clear expectations around attendance, conduct and professionalism
✅ Maybe think about getting a big screen in or switching on the TV in the office - a great way to encourage team spirit and engagement.

The organisations that manage these events well are often those that strike the right balance between supporting employee engagement and meeting business needs.

A little flexibility can boost morale, encourage goodwill and create a positive workplace culture. Equally, clear boundaries help ensure fairness and consistency for everyone.

Whether you're counting down the minutes until kick-off or couldn't tell me who's in which squad, now is a good time to make sure your workplace is prepared.

How does your organisation manage major sporting events such as the World Cup?

Customer experience is often a problem in disguise.

When customers feel passed around or poorly informed, the root cause is usually teams that aren't communicating effectively with each other.

Fix the internal relationships, and the external experience tends to follow.

Most owners know matters. They mean well, they've read the right things, and they genuinely want their teams to work together. And yet the silos persist, the handoffs stay clunky, and the same communication breakdowns keep happening.

This isn't a failure of intent — it's usually a failure to identify the specific obstacles that are actually getting in the way.

The most common one we encounter? Busyness used as a reason to avoid the very conversations that would make everyone less busy.

Poor collaboration creates rework, duplicated effort, and miscommunication — all of which eat far more time than a well-run 30-minute check-in would have. Building small, regular touchpoints into existing rhythms, rather than treating them as extras, is the practical solution.

In a small business, you'd think would come naturally. Everyone knows each other, the team is right there, and there's no sprawling hierarchy to navigate. And yet silos are just as common in a ten-person company as in a ten-thousand-person one. They just look different.

The good news is that small businesses are better placed than large organisations to fix this.

How do you train your to spot and prevent hazards at work?

Risk assessments often feel like something designed for larger organisations, but they’re just as important - if not more so - for . The difference is that they don’t need to be complex to be effective.

Start with the basics: what could realistically cause harm in your workplace? Focus on everyday risks like trips, manual handling, and workstation setup. Addressing these practical issues will have far more impact than trying to cover every possible scenario.
