MAM recently sponsored artist Sarah Nelson, with a £200 grant to support a research trip to Paris.

Sarah is a visual artist based in County Durham. In June, she went to Paris to see Matisse's large paper cut outs in 'Matisse 1941-54'. Beginning to experiment with cut outs in her own figurative work, Sarah wanted to experience the pioneer of the genre first hand. She was also able to visit The Musee Picasso in The Marais – like Matisse, Picasso was “a master of distilled form through simple bold linear gestures”.

Being able to study these works in person helped Sarah understand how they were created and assembled to form the finished works, developing her practice as a result.

Sarah said of the trip: “It was amazing to receive the bursary from Moving Art Management to facilitate the Paris trip. Only when we are able to see a work close up can we truly appreciate the story of the journey behind it. I'm inspired to be bigger and bolder in my own cut out journey and look forward to sharing results in the future.”

Follow Sarah for updates on her work!

HELP SHAPE North East dance, by answering these questions (and more!) in our short sector survey…

Designed by Moving Art Management and Dance City as part of our ongoing consultation project, the survey offers you a chance to let us know about your experience working in the sector. The anonymous responses will help us with our end of project report, influencing broader strategy around supporting dance in the North East.

The survey takes approx. 10 minutes to complete and will be open until the 31st August – link below!

THANK YOU to everyone that joined us at Dance City for the in-person part of our consultation programme!

To have so many people in the room, from across our sector, was a joy to witness – it produced some valuable idea-sharing that will really strengthen the sector, and proved how important collaboration like this can be.

Our consultation is continuing throughout July and August, with an online survey available for anyone that missed our workshop or 1-2-1s. Info and survey on our website: https://www.movingartmanagement.com/news-and-views/consultations-on-north-east-dance
