🌙 Ever wondered what actually happens when your alarm goes off at 3am?

If you run a business, there's a good chance that thought has crossed your mind on the way to bed. Maybe you've even had that call before — the one where you pull on a coat over your pyjamas, find the car keys and drive to a dark, empty building wondering what you're going to find. 😬

Here's the good news: with ADP keyholding and alarm response, it doesn't have to be you. Here's what happens behind the scenes while you're fast asleep 👇

📡 Step 1 — The signal is checked
Your alarm reports to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) that's staffed day and night. The operators look at what's triggered, which zone it's in and whether other detectors have confirmed it, so the right response goes out.

🚗 Step 2 — Our keyholder heads out
Instead of ringing you, the ARC contacts ADP. One of our SIA-licensed officers, who already holds your keys and site instructions, is sent to your premises.

🔦 Step 3 — The site is checked
Our officer carries out a proper look around, outside and in: doors, windows and the area where the alarm was triggered. If there are any signs of a break-in, the police are informed and you'll get a call straight away.

🔒 Step 4 — Reset and locked up
Where it's safe to do so, the alarm is reset and the building is secured just as you left it. If a detector seems to be playing up, we make a note so it can be looked at.

☕ Step 5 — You're updated by morning
By the time you've had your first coffee, there's a clear report waiting for you: what happened, what we found and anything that needs doing.

Most of the time the cause is something simple — a door that wasn't quite shut, a draught moving a decoration, or the odd spider on a sensor. 🕷️ But either way, nobody from your team has had to go out alone in the middle of the night, and nobody's lost a night's sleep over it.

And because we also install and maintain intruder alarms, if a fault turns up during a call-out, our engineers can pick it up. That's the beauty of having everything under one roof. 🛡️

But here's something that often gets overlooked: while the parties are going on, a lot of buildings spend more evenings and weekends sitting empty than they do the rest of the year. 🏢

🍂 Half term is nearly here, and for a whole week many school and college sites will be standing empty.

That's well-deserved time off for pupils and staff. But a quiet site with nobody around is also when security has to work hardest on its own. With the clocks going back the same weekend, the evenings are darker earlier too.

The good news? A few simple checks before the gates close can make a big difference. Here's our quick half-term list:

🔒 Check the perimeter
Walk the boundary and look for damaged fencing, gates or locks. Move or lock away anything that could help someone climb in, like wheelie bins, ladders or building materials.

🚨 Make sure your intruder alarm is monitored
An alarm that only sounds in an empty building isn't much help. Check it's working, set correctly, and connected to a monitoring centre so an activation gets a real response.

📹 Check your CCTV coverage
Are the cameras recording? Are the images clear? Do they cover entrances, car parks, playgrounds and the routes onto the site? And can someone view the footage remotely if needed?

🔑 Confirm who holds the keys
If the alarm goes off at 2am during half term, who gets the call? Make sure keyholder details are up to date. If your team will be away, a professional keyholding and alarm response service means a trained, SIA-licensed officer attends instead.

🪪 Review who has access
If you have access control, check that fobs or cards for leavers, lost passes and old contractors are switched off, and that only the people who need to be on site over the break can get in.

💡 Check your lighting
Make sure external lights are working and timers are adjusted for the darker evenings.

🎃 Ding-dong… nobody there? Must be that time of year again!

Halloween is just around the corner, and we all know what that means: little witches and superheroes on the doorstep, a mountain of sweets, and at least one mystery doorbell-ringer who's mysteriously vanished by the time you open the door. 👻

Most of it is harmless fun, and we love seeing the costumes. But here's the more serious bit. The weeks between Halloween and Bonfire Night often bring a rise in late-night mischief: eggs on windows, fireworks let off near buildings, a bit of graffiti, or someone "just having a look" over a fence after dark. 🕰️ The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and soon it'll be dark by 5pm.

Darker evenings make it easier for opportunist burglars to go unnoticed, so now's a great time to make sure your home or business is ready for winter. A few quick wins:

💡 Put lamps on timers so the house doesn't sit in darkness
🔦 Light up the front door, side passage and driveway
🔔 Test your alarm and check the keypad isn't showing any faults
🔑 Lock uPVC doors with the key, and keep keys away from the letterbox
