There's something you notice about the people in this room. 👀

They listen to understand and help. Not just to respond.

They take notes because they're already thinking about who in their wider network they can connect to the person sat across from them. They hold onto business cards because they actually intend to follow up.

That's the difference between people who turn up and people who really show up.

No egos. No salesmen. No pushiness. Just people having lunch and genuinely moving each other's businesses forward. 🙌

The number one piece of feedback I get about The Business Network South Humberside?

It's the structure. Every single time. 😊

And honestly, I can't even take credit for it. The structure of The Business Network has been the same for decades — long before I took over as host four years ago. It's what's remained consistent throughout and I think it's the reason the network has stood the test of time.

There's something reassuring about knowing exactly what you're walking into. A seminar, open networking, a curated round table lunch and a knowledge share speaker to close the day. Every element has a purpose. Nobody gets lost and nobody leaves wondering if they made any real connections.

But structured doesn't mean stiff. We're not timing people's introductions with a stopwatch. I've heard of networking events that literally put a timer on when you speak — that's not us. People introduce themselves naturally, conversations flow, and the format just quietly makes sure everyone gets their moment.

Structure isn't the enemy of relaxed. Done right, it's actually what creates the relaxed atmosphere in the first place.

That's what we've always tried to do here. And clearly it works. 😊

Something I don't think I talk about enough — so here goes. 😊

When you join The Business Network South Humberside, you're not just joining a room of brilliant people from and . You're plugging into something much bigger than that.

There are Business Network branches in , Central , , and — and as a member here, that whole network is available to you too.

In practice that means a few things. There's a national online database of members across all branches, so if there's a sector or skill set that isn't represented locally, you've got a really good chance of finding exactly what you're looking for through the wider network.

Members can also visit other branches twice a year as part of their South Humberside membership. So if you've got business in London or you're curious to see how another branch runs things, you're more than welcome to go along.

I also personally go to the Manchester Business Network on behalf of my members — it just feels like the right thing to do. And all of us hosts across the different branches talk regularly, share ideas and genuinely work together to get the best out of the network for our members. It's a really collaborative bunch of people behind the scenes.

Anyway — just wanted to shine a light on that side of things because I think it's something people don't always realise when they first join. 👋

Huge thanks must go to Wayne Starkey for presenting the morning seminar at our recent event.

Wayne, from Huntington Ross is an independent and presented his seminar entitled; 'Financial Considerations for a small business: start up - to sale.'

No matter what stage of business our attendees were at, there was a huge amount to take away. For some, the highlights will have been how to maximise growth by using for example a SSAS to buy property, or getting tax relief through smarter pension choices. For others, it was powerful to understand how to determine 'readiness for sale' and how exactly it's possible to optimise the end valuation of your business.

This subject always getting member's heads buzzing with ideas on how they can then implement this powerful planning into their business, so it's fantastic that Wayne is always happy to sit down with a fellow member and simply brainstorm their best way forward financially.

Thank you Wayne for always bringing such valuable insight into the network.

Our recent event was a fantastic way of rounding off Q3, and for many getting back out into the business world after those busy school holidays!

Hosted at the in North Killingholme, like each month, we saw members and guests coming together to learn, collaborate, and grow.

We enjoyed a beautiful lunch of pan fried salmon, crushed new potato and chives, white wine veloute, and pancetta wrapped green beans. Dessert was a decadent strawberry cheesecake with lemon balm.

Diana Catton from looked after our after lunch 'knowledge share' sending us all away with actionable tips about how data protection laws have changed this year.

Today is World Photography Day — and I couldn't let it pass without giving a proper mention to someone who plays a bigger part in this business than most people realise. 📸

Every month at The Business Network South Humberside, Emma Bunn from Natural Aspect shows up and captures our events in a way that just works. The warmth, the conversations, the moments between people — she gets it on camera every time without it ever feeling staged.

And that's the point really. Good business photography isn't about polished, posed shots. It's about showing people who you actually are before they've even met you. In a world where social media is often someone's first impression of your business, that matters.

Emma specialises in brand photography and if you're a business owner who's been putting it off — World Photography Day feels like a pretty good excuse to stop doing that.

Can I be honest about something?

When people ask me what I love most about The Business Network South Humberside, most probably expect me to talk about the connections, the referrals, the business that gets passed around the room.

And yes — all of that is real and it happens.

But honestly? One of the things I love most is that people come to learn as much as they come to connect.

Every month there's a seminar before lunch and a knowledge-share speaker to close the day. Two separate opportunities to walk away knowing something you didn't know when you arrived. It might be a fresh perspective on PR, a new approach to goal setting, a business strategy you'd never considered. Whatever it is, there's always something.

I think there's a version of networking that feels quite hollow — where it's purely transactional, purely about who you can get in front of. And I've never been drawn to that.

What draws me to this network — and what keeps our members coming back — is that the people in the room are genuinely curious. They want to grow. They ask good questions. They take notes. They go away and actually do something with what they've heard.

If you're the kind of person who is just as excited about developing yourself as you are about developing your business, this might just be your kind of room.

So who actually comes to The Business Network South Humberside?

The simple answer is decision makers — business owners, directors, and senior professionals who can walk into a room and speak about their business as if it's truly theirs. People who don't need to check with someone above them before making a decision or committing to a direction.

But honestly, the job title is only half of it.

The people who get the most from this network share something beyond their seniority. They're the ones who are just as focused on developing themselves as they are on developing their business. They show up curious, open to new perspectives, and genuinely excited about being around others who are on the same journey.

They're big thinkers. Goal setters. The kind of people who hold others accountable and mean it — and who equally appreciate being held accountable themselves. When someone in the room hits a rough patch — and it happens to all of us — they're the first to rally around and help lift them back up.

They're collaborative by nature. They don't see competition the way some do, because they're too busy focusing on their own growth to spend energy thinking negatively about others. They look at the person across the table and think "how can we work together?" not "how do I get ahead of them?"

They come because they want to grow — in every sense of the word.
