A new chapter for Dylan Thomas in Swansea.

On International Dylan Thomas Day, Dog With A Bone Creative Studio is proud to announce that we are forming a partnership with the Dylan Thomas Centre (Swansea Council) to help produce a new era of Dylan Thomas-focused work in the city he called home.

Dylan Thomas belongs to the world, but he also belongs here. To our streets, our coastline, our language, our humour, our contradictions, our communities. His work is something to reimagine, reawaken and place back into the hands of audiences, artists, young people and the city itself.

We are incredibly passionate about celebrating Dylan’s legacy in ways that feel alive, accessible and ambitious, through theatre, performance, education, events and creative experiences that honour the past while speaking boldly to the present.

This partnership marks the beginning of something very special. We cannot wait to share what comes next. A new era of Dylan Thomas work, made in Swansea.

Shakespeare’s greatest love story is reborn in the heart of 1926 South Wales in this thrilling new production blending passion, rebellion and the electric spirit of the roaring twenties.

As the country stands on the edge of collapse during the General Strike, two young people from rival worlds fall desperately and dangerously in love. Beneath the glow of jazz halls and dance floors, tensions rise through mining communities fighting for survival, while a new generation begins to challenge the rules of the old world.

Featuring live music, striking visuals, immersive atmosphere and a bold cinematic edge, ROMEO+JULIET transforms Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy into a visceral story of youth, conflict and hope. Flapper glamour collides with coal dust. Poetry collides with protest. And love burns brightly against a divided Wales.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor performance spaces, this ambitious new interpretation launches the Shake The Bard By DWAB initiative: a fresh movement dedicated to reimagining Shakespeare through bold concepts, contemporary energy and accessible storytelling for modern audiences.

We’re casting for a bold, high-energy professional pantomime at YMA, Pontypridd this Christmas! Step into Cloudmere… where cows are bilingual, villains are booed with a “MOOOO!”, and magic might just grow in your back garden! South Wales performers strongly encouraged to apply.

🎭 Roles Available:
Jack, Jill, Dame Dolly Trott, Fairy Moonbeam, Fleshcreep, Squire Squeezy, Silly Billy.

Port Talbot and the Afan Valley will be submitted as our contender for UK Town of Culture 2028.

The UK Government says this competition:

🟡Brings local investment
🟡Showcases local visions and voices
🟡Creates a lasting sense of pride
🟡Opens doors to the arts for everyone

What happens next?

🟢The deadline for Expressions of Interest for UK Town of Culture 2028 is 31st March, with the shortlist of towns expected to be announced this Spring.
🟢Three finalists (one small, one medium, one large town) will be chosen.
🟢The winner will be crowned UK Town of Culture 2028 and receive £3 million.
🟢The two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to deliver parts of their bid.

Cabinet Member for Nature, Tourism and Wellbeing, Cllr Cen Phillips says:

“This new Town and Culture competition represents a tremendous opportunity to change the perception and narrative around Port Talbot and the Afan Valley in particular, though the benefits are expected to reach the wider Neath Port Talbot area.

“For too long, this area has been blighted by a narrative of post-industrial decline and social deprivation, often with scant regard for its long and vibrant history of culture and creativity, or indeed for the incredible landscape of heritage and natural beauty that we have in this dramatic Heart of Wales.

“We have many challenges of course, as do towns across the UK, but this could be our chance to show that we have so much more than that to offer. "
