🐝🐝 Wasp, Bumblebee, Honey Bee or Hornet – What’s the Difference?

Not all flying insects are the same! Here’s how to tell them apart:

🐝 Honey Bees
• Smaller, golden-brown with black stripes
• Slimmer body
• Important pollinators
• Usually found around flowers or near hives
• Can sting once

🐝 Bumblebees
• Larger, rounder and very fluffy
• Black with yellow (sometimes white/orange) bands
• Generally calm and slow-moving
• Nest in gardens, compost heaps or underground

🐝 Wasps
• Bright yellow and black
• Smooth, shiny body (not fluffy)
• More aggressive, especially late summer
• Build papery nests in lofts, sheds & wall cavities
• Can sting multiple times

🐝 Hornets
• Much larger than a wasp
• Brown and yellow rather than bright yellow
• Loud buzzing sound
• Less aggressive than people think — unless disturbed
