Just Be Maritime appreciates that some potential new recruits for Officer Cadetships are unsure what their cadetship will actually entail, both at college and during their seagoing training phases.

To help improve their understanding before applying to us for an Officer Cadetship, we maintain groups of My Cadetship reports, in which our existing cadets currently under training provide their own detailed and engaging accounts.

There are many different pathways that candidates take before starting an officer cadetship. One such candidate is William Waters, who will be starting his deck cadetship in September at the City of Glasgow College, sponsored by Trinity House.

William recently completed a three year degree in History at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd.
During his time there, he joined the Royal Naval Unit Wales (HMS Cambria) and is mentored by Lieutenant James Charles MNM, Master Mariner and Younger Brother of Trinity House.

William said of his journey:

"I joined the URNU when I arrived in Cardiff to learn more about the maritime world. Over the past three years, I have had countless opportunities to see and experience the work of both the Royal and Merchant Navies. I have been able to go to sea on board RN P2000s, see firsthand ships such as Cunard’s Queen Victoria and the RRS James Cook, and spend a day on board one of the Wightlink ferries.
Alongside these ship visits and other incredible experiences provided by the URNU, I was also able to attend the Annual National Service for Seafarers in 2025. As part of this visit, I had the immense privilege of visiting Trinity House.
As a result of these outstanding opportunities, I decided that the Merchant Navy was the best path for me, and I now have the privilege of undertaking a cadetship with Trinity House, starting in August"

William’s time with the URNU will provide a strong foundation for his cadetship and future maritime career. We very much look forward to welcoming him to the Trinity House programme in September.

Trinity House Deck Officer Cadet, Anthony Cullen is currently training onboard HMS Tamar while in Phase 4 of his cadetship.
Throughout his training, Anthony has gained valuable experience on a range of vessels including a cruise ship, a research vessel, and most recently HMS Tamar, a Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) forward deployed in the Pacific.
These photos were taken during recent visits to the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
During his time onboard, Anthony is gaining insight into Royal Navy operations, experience he will carry forward into his future career in the Merchant Navy.
We look forward to welcoming Anthony back to Fleetwood Nautical Campus later this year as he completes the final phase of his training.

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the Sunset event for the Association of Old Worcesters onboard HMS Warrior in Portsmouth.

This marked the final event in the Association’s history and included the lowering of the Worcester Flag by Old Worcester Commander Bob Lineker alongside current Worcester MNCS sponsored Deck Officer Cadet Alexandra Barlow.

Seven current Worcester MNCS / Trinity House Deck Officer Cadets, studying at Fleetwood Nautical Campus and Warsash Maritime School, were also in attendance for this memorable occasion.

Our sincere thanks to Old Worcester Commodore Peter Melson and his wife, Lieutenant Commander Janet Melson for their kind invitation.

We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day in Southampton as we welcomed our latest cohort of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Officer cadets for their induction.
The group included cadets who began their training in January at Glasgow and Fleetwood, alongside those who started at Warsash in April. It was a good opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and importantly to hear first hand from cadets currently training onboard about what life at sea is really like.
A big thank you to Nicola, Jolene, Joe, and Illia for their time and enthusiasm in delivering a full vessel tour giving our new starters a great insight into where they’ll be living and training when they go to sea for the first time later this summer.

Holly and Suzanne attended the Waves Group Ltd, WISTA UK, and Maritime Solent Summer Cruise earlier this week in Southampton.

It was great to be joined by so many JBM managed Officer Cadets from Warsash Maritime School. This was an excellent event for the cadets to network with industry professionals and learn more about the work they do.

We were also joined by MARITIME LONDON trustee Ann Pletschke, who had the opportunity to speak with two new Officer Cadets sponsored by MLOCS.

Thank you to all the organisers for the invitation and a great event.

Earlier today we joined Captain Nigel Hope from Trinity House for a visit to the Officer Cadets training onboard THV Patricia in Southampton.

Deck Cadets Tabitha and Ted are currently in their second sea phase, each with over six months of sea time while Engineer Cadet Charlie is on his first trip.

Meeting cadets onboard is an excellent opportunity to discuss their current training, their upcoming appointments, and for more experienced cadets to talk through what to expect in the final stages of their training programme.

It was also great to catch up with four former JBM managed cadets, who are now serving onboard THV Patricia as qualified officers.

A big thank you to Saga Cruises Deck Officer Cadet Trinny Hogg for sharing photos from her visit to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) today, where she took part in discussions marking International Women in Maritime Day.

During the visit Trinny participated in a roundtable discussion exploring the maritime industry and the challenges it faces with a strong focus on gender equality in recognition of the day.

Trinny also attended the launch of the handbook “Gender Mainstreaming in the Maritime Sector,” which highlights the importance of promoting equality across the industry.

Trinny found the day to be a valuable opportunity to speak with professors and IMO representatives who are passionate about advancing gender equality and celebrating the contributions of women in maritime.
