There are many different pathways that candidates take before starting an officer cadetship. One such candidate is William Waters, who will be starting his deck cadetship in September at the City of Glasgow College, sponsored by Trinity House.
William recently completed a three year degree in History at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd.
During his time there, he joined the Royal Naval Unit Wales (HMS Cambria) and is mentored by Lieutenant James Charles MNM, Master Mariner and Younger Brother of Trinity House.
William said of his journey:
"I joined the URNU when I arrived in Cardiff to learn more about the maritime world. Over the past three years, I have had countless opportunities to see and experience the work of both the Royal and Merchant Navies. I have been able to go to sea on board RN P2000s, see firsthand ships such as Cunard’s Queen Victoria and the RRS James Cook, and spend a day on board one of the Wightlink ferries.
Alongside these ship visits and other incredible experiences provided by the URNU, I was also able to attend the Annual National Service for Seafarers in 2025. As part of this visit, I had the immense privilege of visiting Trinity House.
As a result of these outstanding opportunities, I decided that the Merchant Navy was the best path for me, and I now have the privilege of undertaking a cadetship with Trinity House, starting in August"
William’s time with the URNU will provide a strong foundation for his cadetship and future maritime career. We very much look forward to welcoming him to the Trinity House programme in September.
