A great few days in Liverpool at the IAMI 2026 Conference, where Just Be Maritime was proud to be this year's Supporting Sponsor.

Don Millar was in the panel discussion talking about resourcing future talent for shipping alongside Thomas Campbell (Clyde Marine Training), Ian Spreadborough (SSTG), and moderated by Neil Atkinson (Fleetwood Nautical College).

Our thanks to Gillian Ferguson, Simon Ashton, and the entire IAMI team for organising such a successful event. We look forward to attending again next year.

Our latest Trinity House Deck Officer Cadet, Calum, has recently returned to the UK after spending three months onboard HMS Tamar, the Royal Navy's forward deployed OPV in the Pacific.
During his appointment Calum completed multiple ocean transits and visited Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. Along the way, he developed new skills, broadened his understanding of global maritime operations, and learned about the key differences between military and civilian shipping practices.
The experience will provide Calum with valuable knowledge and perspectives that he can carry forward throughout his Merchant Navy training and future career at sea.

On Saturday, Just Be Maritime attended the Autumn Maritime Careers Open Day at Warsash Maritime School part of Solent University.
The event was a great success, with around 250 prospective candidates and their families attending to meet sponsoring companies and tour the campus facilities.
A big thank you to Matthew Stewart and the WMS team for inviting us, and to all the current Officer Cadets who volunteered their time to support the day.
We are currently recruiting for our winter intake, with start dates available in January, February and April. Recruitment for the September 2027 intake will open later this year.

Yesterday, we attended the sixth biennial Royal Yacht Squadron Maritime Careers Fair on the Isle of Wight.
It was great to be joined by Nigel Hope from Trinity House and Deputy Harbour Master Jennie Smith from Cowes Harbour Commission.
Thank you to the Royal Yacht Squadron for hosting another successful event.

Congratulations to Deck Officer Cadet Liam Whelan, who was awarded Seapeak’s Safety Champion Award for Q2 in recognition of his performance and commitment to safety during his first ship appointment earlier this summer.

This is a fantastic achievement at such an early stage of Liam’s career and a reflection of his performance and professionalism.

The presentation was made by Captain Neil Atkinson Head of Fleetwood Nautical College, and Rachel Groves from JBM, as Liam recently returned to Fleetwood to begin Phase 3 of his cadetship.

Congratulations Liam on this well deserved recognition.

Over the past few months, Trinity House cadets Hamish and Harry have been gaining invaluable hands-on experience aboard THV Patricia as part of their cadetship with Just Be Maritime.

From the bridge to the deck and engine room, our crew gave both cadets a firsthand insight into our operations at sea.

“My time onboard THV Patricia was a great experience with the crew all being warm, welcoming and full of experience. They all made a great effort to engage me in different roles and responsibilities while sharing a lot of knowledge – making me feel motivated to work and learn the many things that could help me towards my future role as a junior officer. Deck Officer Cadet Laura Livingstone sponsored by Trinity House has recently completed Phase 3 of her training at Fleetwood Nautical College and has joined the Northern Lighthouse Board's newest vessel, Pole Star.

At the weekend, Pole Star was alongside in Scalloway opening its doors to the public for ship tours and talks about the vital work carried out by the Northern Lighthouse Board.

It was great to see Laura engaging with visitors, sharing insights into the vessel and her cadetship, while highlighting the important role NLB plays in supporting safe navigation around our coasts every day.

Today is Merchant Navy Day, celebrated annually on 3 September as a way to highlight the role played by merchant seafarers, past, present and future.

By flying the Red Ensign, the symbol of the Merchant Navy, we can all express our deep gratitude to those that keep trade moving around the globe.

Trinity House is proud to fly a modified Red Ensign from its properties and ships and has been committed to sponsoring merchant seafaring cadets for centuries.
