Our last project of the year was a bit of a special one.
The project was a garden, on behalf of a charity, for an ex marine who was injured and has been wheelchair bound for over 10 years.
Although he had access to a patio area there was a lot of additional garden he couldn’t get to.
He had also showed an interest in plants and his care team were keen to encourage that.
The idea was to give him access to as much garden as possible, without making it look like a car park. Gentle ramps connect the levels, with upstandings to prevent him from falls where there is a step in height.
The original patio area was cleaned and blended with porcelain, resin bonded gravel and artificial lawn surfaces to create interest.
We also wanted to provide a shady area so he could still enjoy the garden during the heat of summer (and with a tarp thrown over it, in the pouring rain too - as we experienced for a change!)
The planting was provided by 4 raised, wheelchair accessible, beds, including one he could be wheeled under and be able to be involved with potting or sowing.
The small pond was relocated, along with its frogs, and an olive tree, chosen for its wheelchair accessible height, positioned so he can get up close and personal when it produces olives next summer.
We are really excited that James will be able to enjoy the additional space, and wish him well in his continued convelessence.
