Julius Caesar. Aulus Hirtius, praetor. AV Aureus, Rome, 46 BC. D/ C. CAESAR COS. TER. Veiled female head (Vesta or Pietas?) right. R/ Emblems of the augurate and pontificate: lituus, guttus and securis; A HIRTIVS P R around. RBW 1636; Calicó 36; Cr. 466/1. AV. 8.04 g. 20 mm. R. Superbly struck and well centered. EF. Aulus Hirtius, who held the office of praetor when this coin was issued, was a close associate of both Cicero and Caesar and served as one of Caesar’s legates in Gaul. In 43 BC he attained the consulship, having been appointed by Caesar, and was dispatched together with Octavian and Pansa to confront Antony, who was besieging Decimus Brutus at Mutina. Although Hirtius succeeded in defeating Antony, he was killed while leading the assault on Antony’s camp. He is also traditionally credited with completing Caesar’s commentaries on the Gallic, Alexandrine, African, and Spanish wars.

R/ Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ in two lines; kufic inscription with titles around; mint and date formula in outer margin. BY 25; Malloy 3; Schl. pl. V, 19; Album 730. AV. 3.62 g. 22 mm. R. Lovely toning. Good EF. This variety always features normally legible Kufic legends, always from the Misr mint and in many cases partially or completely dated to the following years 506, 508, 509 and 516.

Full weight and choice example, nicely toned. Banker's mark on reverse. EF. Denarius struck in 54 BC by Caepio Brutus, better known as M. Junius Brutus, one of the leaders in the conspiracy that assassinated Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The types are records of his ancestry. Lucius Junius Brutus was a semilegendary figure, held to have ousted the despotic Etruscan king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus from Rome in 509 BC and then to have founded the Roman Republic. Gaius Servilius Ahala was celebrated in Roman tradition as a hero who freed his country from the threat of tyranny by killing Sp. Maelius in 439 BC.

R/ Aphrodite seated right, holding dove in her left hand and placing her right on seat. 1097; CNS III 1. AE. 27.61 g. 29.5 mm. RR. Very rare and unusually attractive for issue. Dark green patina. Clearly visible undertype. VF. This large and somewhat clunky type is the only issue ever struck by Petra, a little known small settlement in northwestern Sicily.

A prima vista, il rovescio di questo asse di Antonino Pio sembra mostrare una scena di guerra: una figura armata scende dal cielo verso una donna addormentata.

Ma la storia è molto diversa.

È Marte che discende verso Rea Silvia, la vestale destinata a diventare madre di Romolo e Remo. Un incontro mitologico dal quale, secondo la tradizione, avrà origine Roma.

Ma perché Antonino Pio, quasi mille anni dopo, decide di raffigurare proprio questo momento?
