A position gives authority.

Influence earns trust.

Many professionals spend years pursuing titles.

Fewer invest the same effort in building the credibility, consistency, and judgment that cause others to listen when they speak.

The most effective leaders understand that influence does not begin with a promotion.

It begins with:

• Reliability
• Competence
• Sound judgment
• The ability to create confidence in others

Titles may open doors.

Influence determines what happens once you enter the room.

Which matters more in today's workplace: position or influence?

Some of the most important leadership decisions are not the most popular.

They are the decisions that:

• Protect standards when shortcuts are available
• Address problems before they become crises
• Prioritize long-term outcomes over short-term comfort
• Create accountability where none previously existed

Leadership is not always tested when things are going well.

It is often tested when difficult decisions must be made and someone must take responsibility for the outcome.

The willingness to carry that responsibility is one of the clearest indicators of leadership maturity.

What leadership decision taught you the most about responsibility?

05/06/2026

Leadership is often measured by immediate results.

But its greatest impact is usually seen much later.

In the people developed.
In the standards established.
In the culture strengthened.
In the systems left behind.

The most effective leaders do more than achieve targets.

They create conditions that allow others to succeed long after they have moved on.

That is the difference between performance and legacy.

As we continue to spotlight women leaders across Africa, we are reminded that leadership is not only about what is accomplished today.

It is also about what endures tomorrow.

What do you believe is the most important legacy a leader can leave behind?

03/06/2026

Many leadership journeys have something in common.

The responsibility came before the recognition.

Before the promotion.
Before the title.
Before the visibility.

There were decisions to make.
Teams to support.
Problems to solve.
Standards to uphold.

Leadership often develops long before others acknowledge it.

That is why meaningful recognition matters.

Not because recognition creates leadership, but because it helps document and elevate leadership that already exists.

The women shaping institutions today are not waiting for permission to lead.

They are already doing the work.

Who is a woman leader you know whose contribution deserves greater recognition?

01/06/2026

Strong nations are built by strong institutions.

And strong institutions are built by leaders who take responsibility for outcomes beyond themselves.

On this Madaraka Day, we reflect on a principle that extends beyond public office:

Leadership is stewardship.

Every day, across Africa, women are making decisions that strengthen organizations, develop people, improve services and contribute to long-term progress.

Much of this work happens quietly.

Yet its impact is felt in the institutions, businesses and communities that depend on effective leadership.

As we mark Madaraka Day, we celebrate the value of responsible leadership and the role it plays in shaping a stronger future.

Women in Leadership (WIL) has focused on identifying women who:

• Operate with responsibility at institutional level
• Influence outcomes beyond their immediate roles
• Contribute to stability, direction, and performance
• Lead within systems - often without public visibility

Recognition is not only about visibility.
It is about documenting leadership that matters.

A strong nomination goes beyond praise.
It demonstrates leadership.

As Season 4 nominations continue, we are seeing

• The scope of responsibility the individual holds
• The decisions they are trusted to make
• The impact of those decisions on teams, systems, or outcomes
• Evidence of leadership beyond task ex*****on

This is not about titles or popularity.
It is about demonstrated leadership within real environments.

Strong nominations make it easier to recognise the right leaders

If you are submitting a nomination, take the time to clearly demonstrate leadership impact.

Not all leadership is visible.
But its impact is always measurable.

Across institutions, there are women who:

• Hold teams together during uncertainty
• Maintain standards when pressure builds
• Ensure continuity when systems are strained
• Make decisions that prevent failure - not just drive success

Their work is rarely amplified.
But its absence would be immediately felt.

Season 4 of Women in Leadership (WIL) recognises this form of leadership - steady, consistent and structurally important.

Because institutions are not only built by bold moves,
but by reliable leadership over time.

Nominate a woman whose leadership holds systems together - even when it goes unseen.

Not every high performer is a leadership candidate

Many professionals deliver strong results.
Fewer operate at a level where their decisions shape outcomes beyond their immediate role.

The difference is not effort.
It is scope of influence.

Season 4 of Women in Leadership (WIL) recognises women who:

• Influence decisions beyond their job description
• Are trusted with responsibility that impacts others
• Shape direction, not just deliver tasks
• Contribute to institutional stability and continuity

This is leadership measured through responsibility, not visibility.

And it often exists in roles that are not publicly recognised.

As nominations continue, we encourage employers and peers to look beyond performance - and identify leadership that carries institutional weight.

Where leadership actually gets tested

Most leadership careers do not stall at entry level.
They stall in the middle.

At the point where:
• Responsibility increases
• Visibility becomes selective
• Expectations expand beyond technical competence
• Influence begins to matter as much as performance

This is where leadership shifts from ex*****on to judgment.

Season 4 of Women in Leadership (WIL) focuses on women operating at this level -
where decisions carry weight and leadership is exercised within systems, not outside them.

These are leaders who:
• Hold complexity without constant recognition
• Navigate structure, pressure and accountability
• Deliver outcomes in environments that are not always visible

This is where institutions are either strengthened - or strained.

If you work with women leading at this level, consider who should be formally recognised.
