🧫 You might have seen "organoids" in the news lately. But what actually are they?

🧪 The short version:
Organoids are miniature, 3D versions of human organs — grown in a lab from stem cells or patient tissue.

Unlike traditional cell cultures (which are flat and often artificial), organoids self-organize into structures that look and behave like real tissue.

• A gut organoid forms a lumen.
• A brain organoid develops layered cortical structure.
• A tumor organoid preserves the patient's own cancer genetics.

Why does this matter for research?
Because drugs that work in a petri dish often fail in humans.
Animal models are better — but they're not human.

Organoids are the closest thing we have to testing a drug on a patient before the patient ever takes it.

Research published in 2024 showed that patient-derived organoids predicted drug response in colorectal cancer patients with ~90% accuracy — before those patients started treatment.

That's the kind of model that changes how we develop drugs.
