If you manage a building in New Zealand, you'll hear these terms constantly. Here's what they actually mean, and why both matter.

Compliance Schedule�Your building's legally required maintenance plan. It lists every Specified System (fire alarms, sprinklers, emergency lighting, etc.) and states:
�• What needs inspecting�• How often it must be checked�• Who's qualified to do it

Think of it as your building's service manual. It's issued when the building gets its Code Compliance Certificate and updated whenever systems change.
Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF)
�Your annual proof to the council that you've actually done the work. It's a legal statement saying:
�• All Specified Systems were inspected as required�• All inspections were done by qualified people�• Everything complies (or you've documented what doesn't)

You submit this to your Territorial Authority every 12 months.

Here's the key:�The Compliance Schedule tells you what to do.�The BWOF confirms you did it.

Know Your Fire Extinguisher? Here's What You Need On-Site.

Not all fire extinguishers do the same job. Here's how to verify your building has the right equipment in the right places - NZ standard.

Look for the colour band on the label:

🔴 Red (Water) – Class A fires (wood, paper, textiles). Can't be used near electricity.

🔵 Blue (Foam) – Class A & B (flammable liquids). Safe for most commercial spaces.

⚪ White (CO₂) – Class E (electrical). No residue, ideal near server rooms or switchboards.

🟡 Yellow (Wet Chemical) – Class F (cooking oils/fats). Required in commercial kitchens.

⚫ Black (Dry Powder) – Multi-class, but messy. Usually for outdoor or high-risk industrial areas.

ABE Dry Powder extinguishers cover Class A, B and E; your practical all-rounder for most NZ workplaces. But kitchens need wet chemical. Electrical areas work best with CO₂.
