Copy right. Works for all. Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) provides licences to help make copying, scanning and sharing printed works easy and legal.

We play a key role in making creative rights valuable assets for all New Zealanders, be they rightsholders (like creators or publishers), or users such as educators and students. We enable New Zealand’s creative people to record and manage their copyright, as well as package the copyright in such a way that users can access the work through a simple licence. We see ourselves as an empowering organisation, making sure everyone enjoys their rights and gets full value from them. We issue the licences, and collect the revenues to distribute back to the rightsholders. We are a not-for-profit organisation, jointly owned by the Publishers Association of New Zealand (PANZ) and the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA). To support understanding of copyright we provide online learning and information resources, and we advocate for legislation that will support the endeavours of New Zealand's talented creative people. Exciting news for creators!

Our Chief Executive, Sam Irvine, and Simon Hutson, CEO of the Copyright Licensing Agency UK, have signed a new agreement at the IFRRO World Congress.

The agreement covers how published content included in the licence can be used to prompt generative AI tools. Put simply, it means licensed organisations in New Zealand and the UK can use this content, while helping royalties flow back to the authors, publishers and rightsholders behind it.

As technology changes how creative work is used, agreements like this help ensure creators continue to be recognised and rewarded for their work.

Tāwhia Copyright Aotearoa is proud to have distributed $5.8 million in licensing revenue to rightsholders (publishers and authors)- both local and globally based- in 2025.

A total of 670 rightsholders have been allocated royalties through our 2025 distribution.

This distribution is a reflection of CLNZ's continued commitment to ensuring creators are recognised and rewarded when their work is copied and shared.

It's the final days to enter the $25,000 CLNZ | NZSA Writers' Award.

This award supports Aotearoa New Zealand non-fiction writers, including those working in education, to dedicate serious time to a writing project.

2024 winner, Mark Derby, used the award to focus on his project ‘Outlaw Prophet - Hakaraia Mahika and the Tauranga Wars’ (working title).
