It might start with something small.

Mum seems a little more tired than usual. Dad isn't eating as much as he normally would. Or perhaps something just doesn't seem quite right.
And suddenly, you're wondering whether it's something to worry about, who to call, or what to do next.

For families, especially those who don't live nearby, these moments can feel unsettling.
That's why having the right people around matters.
Someone who knows Mum or Dad's usual routines. Someone who notices when things seem different, takes those concerns seriously, and knows when to let the family or a healthcare professional know.
Because caring isn't just about helping with everyday tasks. It's also about paying attention, staying connected, and making sure changes don't go unnoticed.
And sometimes, simply knowing there's someone looking out for your loved one can bring a little more peace of mind. 💚

Wondering what support might look like for your loved one? We're always happy to have a chat.

💚 “I'm perfectly fine, love. You don't need to worry about me.”

Sound familiar?

You know Mum could use a little extra support, but every time you bring it up, the conversation seems to go nowhere.

It's hard, isn't it? You want to make life easier for them, but the last thing you want is to make them feel like they're losing control.

Sometimes, the way we approach the conversation makes all the difference.

Because at the heart of it, you both want the same thing: for Mum or Dad to feel happy, comfortable and independent in their own home. 💚

Has Mum or Dad ever brushed off your offer to help?

Every family finds their own way through these conversations. If you'd like a little guidance, we're always happy to have a chat.

💚 Mum says she's fine. Dad insists he's managing. But you've started to notice little things.

Maybe the fridge isn't as full as it used to be. The house feels a little less tidy, or Mum doesn't seem as interested in going out anymore. Perhaps Dad has had a fall, or you're finding yourself checking in more often, just to make sure everything's okay. None of these things necessarily means something is seriously wrong. But when little changes start adding up, they're worth paying attention to.

The tricky part? Mum and Dad might not see things the same way you do.

As their son or daughter, you might find yourself wondering whether to step in or give them more space. There's no perfect moment to start that conversation.

Sometimes, it begins with a simple question: "Mum, how are you finding things around the house lately?"

Because recognising when a little extra support might help isn't about taking away their independence. It's about finding ways to help them keep it. 💚

Have you noticed any little changes in Mum or Dad lately?

When people think about home care, they often imagine something quite clinical.
But sometimes, it looks a lot more ordinary than that. ☕
Imagine a morning that begins with a friendly hello at the front door.
There's a bit of catching up to do before heading to the kitchen to make lunch.
Then it's off to the supermarket, where Mum gets to choose her favourite things, have a chat with the lady at the checkout and enjoy being out and about.

Back home, the groceries are put away, the kettle goes on and there's time for another cuppa.
Nothing particularly exciting happened.
But Mum had company. She got out of the house. She enjoyed her usual routine, with someone alongside her to make things a little easier.
And that's something we really value about support at home.
It doesn't always have to involve big changes.

Sometimes, it's about helping someone continue enjoying the little things that make an ordinary day feel like their own.
A familiar routine. A friendly conversation. A reason to get out for a while.

The little things are often the big things. 💚

“Mum, I think you need some help.”
It sounds like a caring thing to say. And of course, it comes from a good place.
But for someone who has spent their whole life looking after themselves and everyone around them, those words can be difficult to hear.
Mum might feel that you're questioning her independence.
Dad might worry that accepting help means giving up control over his own life.
And suddenly, a conversation that began with love turns into a disagreement.

Sometimes, changing the way we start that conversation can make all the difference.
Rather than telling Mum what she needs, try asking how she's finding things.
Is the shopping becoming tiring? Would she enjoy having someone along? Is there something around the house she'd happily hand over?
And then give her time to answer.

She might not be ready to talk about it straight away, and that's okay too.
The most important thing is that Mum or Dad still feels heard, respected and involved.
Because getting older shouldn't mean losing your voice in decisions about your own life. 💚

Save this for a conversation you might need one day.

You pop round to see Mum, just like you always do. ❤️
She puts the kettle on, asks how the kids are doing and tells you everything is fine.
But while you're there, you notice a few things.
There's not much in the fridge. The washing hasn't been put away. And Mum mentions she hasn't been out to the shops for a while.
Nothing seems particularly worrying on its own.
After all, we all have days when we don't feel like doing much.

But sometimes, those little changes are worth paying attention to.
As our parents grow older, everyday tasks can gradually become a little more tiring or difficult. And because those changes often happen slowly, they can be easy to miss.
It doesn't always mean something is wrong, or that Mum suddenly needs someone looking after her.
Sometimes, it's simply an opportunity to sit down together and ask how things are really going.
Perhaps there's something she's finding harder lately. Or maybe there's a small way you could make her week a little easier.
Because caring often begins with something very simple.

Noticing. Listening. And being there. 💚

💚 Every family's situation is different. If you'd like to talk things through, we're here to listen.

Have you helped an ageing parent or loved one? We’d value your experience.

Many families only begin looking for information and support when something changes suddenly — such as a fall, hospital stay, health diagnosis or growing concerns about safety at home.

We’re conducting research to better understand the challenges families face when navigating ageing, care options, funding, planning and finding the right support.

We’d love to hear from:

• Family members supporting an ageing parent or loved one
• People who have been through this experience previously
• Carers and health professionals
• Retirement village, aged care and community support professionals

The questionnaire is short, and your experience could help identify where families need clearer information and better support.

For more info and to complete the questionnaire click here:

Please feel free to share this post with anyone who may be willing to contribute. We’re also happy to share the research findings with those who are interested.

Thank you for helping us better understand the ageing journey for New Zealand families.
