Biodiversity is the lifeblood of a thriving ecosystem, and the presence of native plants and bird life significantly enhances the unique terroir of our vineyard sites.

At our Te Muna Estate vineyard in Martinborough, areas within our river terraces that are unsuitable for vines are perfect for cultivating native plants.
Over the years we’ve come to understand this site more deeply, and we’re committed to strategically planting at least one hectare of natives every year.

It’s a gradual process, but we’re excited by the progress. A belt of natives is starting to take shape, encouraging biodiversity, enriching the land and providing ground cover that doesn’t need mowing.

We’re looking forward to watching it grow and to seeing how it benefits the wider region in the years ahead.

It’s remarkable to see how Le Sol has evolved over 25 vintages, shaped by a deeper understanding of our site, precision in the vineyard, increasing vine age and ongoing refinements in the w**ery.

Yet its distinct sense of place has never wavered. Each vintage expresses our mighty Gimblett Gravels site, balancing intensity with florality. Among the standouts is our new 2024 release, the first with Ben Tombs at the helm, and it has been met with outstanding critical acclaim.

This week, our Hawke’s Bay w**e region is in the global spotlight.

Te Matau-a-Māui (Hawke’s Bay) is hosting the Great W**e Capitals International Conference, bringing together some of the world’s most celebrated w**e regions.

Since joining the Great W**e Capitals Global Network in 2023, Hawke’s Bay has taken its place alongside Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Mendoza, Bilbao-Rioja and the other storied names in this exclusive community: eleven regions across six countries. It’s a designation earned, not given, recognising the depth of a region’s w**e industry, its history, tourism, education and business credentials, and the character of the place itself.

We’re proud to be a Gold Sponsor of this year’s conference, and last night we welcomed our international guests to our Giants Estate amongst the vines for an evening celebrating our region, our w**e, and the stories that make Hawke’s Bay what it is.

We were delighted to host and for the grand finale of Gary Barlow’s Food & W**e Tour: New Zealand, and wanted to share a few highlights.

Our founder, Terry Peabody, happened to be at Craggy Range during filming. Alongside grandson David, he shared the family’s vision and the story of how it all began when Mary and daughter Mary-Jeanne convinced him after a few w**es deep, to create a world-class w**ery - nobody tells it better!

Along with our w**es, shared some highlights from the kitchen in the breathtaking setting of our new Lodge. It was a stunner of a day, and we couldn’t be prouder to put our little region in the spotlight on the global stage.

Today we remember Doug Wisor, one of Craggy Range’s founding w**emakers, who tragically passed away in a kitesurfing accident 22 years ago.

Those who worked alongside Doug remember his passion, knowledge, and boundless energy, especially at harvest. Amid the long, hectic weeks of vintage, he would organise a family meal to bring the whole team together. It’s a tradition that still lives on at Craggy Range today.

Doug also kept spirits high through vintage with his eclectic mix of tunes - The Beastie Boys were a particular favourite, often heard blasting across our Gimblett Gravels w**ery.

Born in the United States, Doug was an exceptional talent. His Pinot Noir and Syrah quickly earned acclaim as some of the finest w**es being made in New Zealand at the time, helping put both Craggy Range and our country’s w**es on the world stage.

In 2006, we established the Doug Wisor Memorial Scholarship in partnership with the American-Australian Association. Each year it gives a young, gifted American w**emaker the chance to work harvest with us, carrying on Doug’s curiosity, his drive for excellence and his love of w**emaking.

Today we raise a glass, and maybe turn the music up a little, for Doug, the remarkable young man whose influence continues to shape the Craggy Range story.

Introducing our Icon Pinot Noir Project.

We continue to invest in our Pinot Noir programme. Last year we planted a 3ha high-density block at our Te Muna Estate Vineyard, in Martinborough, on a prime site with soils we know are ideally suited to Pinot Noir.

We chose a massal selection of Abel and Clone 114, tended with soft pruning principles from day one. One year on, we’ve just finished native planting around this special block to encourage biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

Take a look at the progress - the vines are thriving, and we look forward to seeing how this exceptional site expresses itself in the w**es to come.

Earlier this year, we welcomed the wonderful Gary Barlow and Jason Manford to Craggy Range as part of Gary Barlow’s Food & W**e Tour: New Zealand.

It was an absolute pleasure to host them and the crew, to share our story and show them around our Giants Estate, and to give them a taste of the hospitality we’ve come to be known for. Above all, it was a chance to shine a light on our special region in this corner of the world.

Our Gimblett Gravels vineyard in Hawke's Bay was once destined to become a quarry, but thankfully it was saved for vines by the determination of local vignerons. That spirit is honoured in this w**e.

Produced only in exceptional vintages, 2024 is one of those years. Only a very small amount has been made, and it's the first release since 2020.

Aromas of dark cherry and blackberry, with a hint of graphite and earthiness. The palate is richly layered and medium-bodied, showing a vibrant Cabernet-driven core of cassis and dark cocoa.

An energetic release, The Quarry 2024 is a rare, powerfully structured w**e that will reward time in the cellar.

Spring sees the vineyards burst back into life, and this season we're replanting 7 hectares of Chardonnay at our Gimblett Gravels site in Hawke’s Bay, and 10 hectares of Pinot Noir at our Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough.

With each vintage, our understanding and knowledge of both these sites deepens, and these considered decisions are made with our long-term perspective in mind, aligning with our 1,000 year family trust.

These young vines will carry the story forward for decades to come, and and we look forward to the w**es they will one day become.
