Upgrading one EFTPOS terminal is straightforward. Upgrading 110 of them across more than 60 stores takes a bit more planning.

That was the job for Barkers Max Group, the team behind Barkers and MAX, when their terminals reached PCI end-of-life. Our field team handled the whole swap ourselves, so the group didn’t have to pay a third-party installer at every store.

“We saved literally tens of thousands of dollars,” says Julian Harrison, Group IT Manager at Barkers Max.

Staff picked up the new terminals with minimal training, refunds now go straight through the POS, and Julian says that when something does need fixing, new equipment gets to site next day, if not sooner.

Australia's card surcharge ban starts this Thursday, 1 October. If you run a business in New Zealand, you can keep surcharging as usual. We've had a few questions about this over the past week, so here's where things stand:

⚫ From 1 October, businesses in Australia can no longer add a surcharge to EFTPOS, Visa, or Mastercard payments, either in store or online. American Express, UnionPay, and PayPal have also chosen to drop surcharging in Australia from the same date. Those rules only apply to businesses operating in Australia.
⚫ A similar ban was proposed in New Zealand in 2025 but did not go ahead. Surcharging is still legal here under the Retail Payment System Act 2022, including on payments made with Australian cards.
⚫ If you surcharge, the usual rules still apply. Your rate should reflect what you actually pay to accept card payments, and you need to show it clearly before your customer pays.
