📍 Bewani & Walsa (Maka Base) Town Hall Engagements

The Frieda River Community Affairs Team, together with representatives from the East Sepik and West Sepik Provincial Governments, has completed our Town Hall Engagements in Bewani and Walsa (Maka Base) as part of Phase One of the District Town Hall Engagement Program.

The sessions provided communities with firsthand information on the Sepik Development Project, including the proposed mine, hydroelectric power component, power transmission network, infrastructure development, environmental permitting processes, and project timelines.

Community members actively participated in the discussions, raising questions about employment opportunities, local business participation, landowner identification, Community Development Agreements (CDAs), benefit-sharing arrangements, and the potential direct and indirect benefits the project could bring to their communities.

The team also emphasised key project commitments, including compliance with strict environmental permit conditions and the commitment that there will be no riverine disposal of mine waste.

We thank the provincial government representatives, community leaders, LLG officials, students, and residents who attended and contributed to the discussions. Your participation is helping build awareness, understanding, and readiness for future opportunities.

📣District Town Hall Engagement Update

Our District Town Hall Engagements continue to attract strong community participation across West Sepik Province, with successful engagements recently held in Amanab and Vanimo.

In Amanab, discussions centred on the Sepik Development Project, environmental permitting processes, landownership matters, infrastructure development, road connectivity, and opportunities for local participation and benefits. Community leaders highlighted the importance of education, workforce readiness, and working together to ensure local people are prepared to take advantage of future opportunities.

In Vanimo, community members showed strong interest in employment opportunities, business spin-offs, and benefit-sharing arrangements. Many appreciated the opportunity to receive firsthand information from the project team, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the project's development process and potential benefits for the province.

These engagements continue to provide an important platform for open dialogue, ensuring communities remain informed and have the opportunity to participate and contribute meaningfully in discussions about the project's future.

PRESS UPDATE: Telefomin Town Hall – District Engagement Kick-off

Yesterday, we officially kicked off our District Town Hall Engagement Program in Telefomin, bringing together community leaders, landowners, government representatives, and residents for an open and constructive dialogue on the project.

The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss the environmental assessment process, landowner matters, employment and business opportunities, infrastructure development, and the potential social and economic benefits for local communities. Participants also raised important questions on environmental safeguards, geotechnical studies, critical enabling infrastructures such as roads, health services, telecommunications, and benefit-sharing arrangements.

The strong turnout and active participation highlighted the community’s commitment to ensuring development is delivered responsibly, participatory, and in a way that creates lasting benefits for Telefomin and the wider region.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their views, and contributed to the discussions. We look forward to continuing these conversations across the district as part of our ongoing engagement program.

🇵🇬 Yesterday, our FRL team joined the people of Telefomin District at the station to commemorate Papua New Guinea's 51st Anniversary through prayer and the raising of our National Flag.

Today, the team begins the District Town Hall Engagement for West Sepik Province, where we will share updates on the Sepik Development Project with the people of Telefomin.

We look forward to engaging with the community and discussing the project's progress and opportunities for the district.

✨ What an incredible two days (5-6th August) at the Sepik River Arts and Crocodile Festival in Ambunti!

From breathtaking cultural performances to meaningful conversations with community members and students, the festival was a wonderful celebration of Sepik culture and identity.

Our team enjoyed meeting visitors at the FRL Tent and answering questions about the Frieda River Copper-Gold Project, particularly around biodiversity, environmental management, the proposed dam, and the project's economic opportunities and challenges.

A special thank you to the students from Ambunti Secondary School who stopped by with thoughtful and engaging questions.

Thank you to everyone who visited us during the festival. We are proud supporters of SRCAF and look forward to being part of this important celebration of culture and community for many years to come.
