Adega Belém Urban Winery brings winemaking right to the heard of the city. Owned and run by the Catarina Moreira and David Picard, the winery is located in Lisbon’s urban neighborhood of Belém, near the River Tejo, Carriage Museum and Pastéis de Belém. The grapes are grown in the foothills of Lisbon’s Monsanto mountain and in the Caparide Valley above Estoril. An additional part is grown the villages of Palmela in Setubal and Bemposta near Alenquer. The wines are handcrafted using state-of-the-art cellar technology and a minimal intervention approach to make the most delicious wines possible from each grape variety. Adega Belém works with endemic grape varieties and yeasts because it makes more interesting wines reflecting the respective varietal characters as much as the special terroir of the winery and the Belém neighborhood. We use locally harvested grapes grown under integrated vineyard management, lightweight bottles, chemical-agent-free cleaning, energy saving inverter technology, recycled cardboard packaging, and have a in-house waste water treatment plant. We love Lisbon, we live in Lisbon and we make every single wine in our winery in Lisbon. Bringing the winery inside the city means bringing the mystery of fermentation right to the doorstep of our clients. Adega Belém is a family venture and everyone, young and old, gets involved. Sociologist and philosopher Edgar Morin passed. He was one of the first French writers that David read still as an undergraduate (l'homme et la mort) and who started to provide him elements of response to questions he had long had about all these moral-philosophical absolutes - like beauty, truth, nature, goodness, etc - almost religiously cherished by the German educated middle-class milieu in which he grew up. Morin helped him to learn to deconstruct these as cosmological narratives, but also live with them and to make peace with the inherent contradictions of these candid worldviews so present during his childhood, claiming transparency, science, rationality, justice on the one hand, but then always seeking refuge , ultimately, in some kind of "deeper" unconditional order, a form of nature divine without the beard. Morin laid the base for David's later work on magic and modernity (in tourism, in nature conservation, ultimately in wine culture), exploring these contradictions as structuring counterpoints of modern culture and cosmology. For Morin, wine was much more than a beverage; it was a profound expression of culture, human complexity, and what he called the poetic quality of life. Wine accompanying the necessary transgression and excess, euphoria and ultimately fraternity that makes us feel human and, paradoxically maybe, constitutes the very foundation of social order. A grand inspiration for a young anthropologist then, a grand inspiration for a not anymore so young winemaker still now! thank you for having been here and shared those ideas. You made intellectual life feel juicy, and put up wine and jus against the sterility, bloodlessness, and self imposed barriers of contemporary academia.
