A large following does not make someone qualified to advise you on a €500,000 investment.

Moving to Portugal, making content about Portugal, or advising clients from thousands of kilometres away does not make someone an expert in Portuguese immigration law or regulated investments.

The Golden Visa is not a lifestyle purchase. It combines immigration law, regulated investment products, due diligence, tax considerations and long-term capital allocation.

Before committing €500,000, ask a few uncomfortable questions:

Who is actually giving me the legal advice?
Who assessed the investment?
Are they qualified to do either?
And will they still be here when something goes wrong?

The world is becoming riskier. Portugal is becoming less risky.

In March 2026, the ECB’s measure of geoeconomic risk reached its highest level on record.

Meanwhile, Portugal is moving in the opposite direction:

🇵🇹 Public debt: 89.6% of GDP, lowest in 16 years
🇵🇹 2025 budget surplus: €1.3bn
🇵🇹 S&P: A+ / Positive
🇵🇹 Fitch: A / Positive

Portugal isn’t an economic powerhouse.

It doesn’t need to be.

What matters is the trajectory.

A VISA LAWYER SHOULD NOT DECIDE WHERE YOUR €500,000 GOES.

And neither should an influencer who moved to Portugal two years ago and suddenly became an expert in everything Portuguese.

Golden Visas.
Investments.
Funds.
Tax.
Real estate.
Citizenship.

Apparently, a few thousand followers can now replace years of professional experience.

It can’t.

The Portuguese Golden Visa involves several completely different areas of expertise.

Portugal has already won the battle for attention.

The next battle is for capital.

A few days ago, we wrote that Portugal is exceptionally good at attracting wealthy people, but less effective at giving them reasons to commit capital here for the next ten years. That may be starting to change.

More than €55 billion in infrastructure investment is expected over the next few years. But that headline is only part of the story.

Portugal’s data centre capacity has grown 23% since 2024, making it one of the fastest-growing markets globally.

Installed solar capacity has surpassed 7 GW. Renewables accounted for around 75% of mainland electricity production in the first seven months of 2026.

Energy. Data centres. AI infrastructure. Logistics. Transport. Industry. Global connectivity.

Portugal is building a more relevant economic base. And it has one structural advantage: International wealth already wants to be here.

This photo could have been taken in Miami.

But it wasn’t.

It was taken in Quarteira, in the Algarve.

And that helps explain why Robert De Niro and Nobu Hospitality are investing in Portuguese hospitality.

Nobu is developing a new luxury resort at Monte Rei, in the eastern Algarve, with 100 rooms and suites, a signature restaurant and approximately 21,000 square metres of villas and branded residences.

The name attracts attention.

The numbers explain the decision.

In 2025, Portugal generated approximately €29.1 billion in tourism revenues.

The travel and tourism balance reached €22 billion, equivalent to 7.2% of GDP.

During the first half of 2026, overnight stays increased by only 1.3%, while accommodation revenues rose by 5.4%.

Portugal is not simply attracting more tourists.

It is generating more value from each visitor.

Higher room rates.
Better operators.
More premium demand.
More spending on hotels, restaurants, wellness, golf and experiences.

Institutional capital has already understood this.

Hotel investment in Portugal reached approximately €512 million in the first half of 2026, up 82% year-on-year.

Around 85% of that capital was directed towards five-star and luxury assets.

For a Golden Visa investor, some exposure to Portuguese hospitality is, in my view, close to a no-brainer.

But only through the right fund.

A strong sector does not automatically make every fund a good investment.

The manager, structure, entry valuation, fees and exit strategy still matter.

For years, investment migration has been sold on one metric: speed.

But what if that’s the wrong metric?

If you’re investing €250,000, €500,000 or more to secure a genuine Plan B, the first question shouldn’t be “How fast?”

Recent years have been revealing.

🇲🇹 Malta’s Citizenship by Investment model was fundamentally challenged by the Court of Justice of the European Union.

🇪🇸 Spain closed its Golden Visa altogether.

🇬🇷 Greece raised investment thresholds to as much as €800,000 in prime areas while cracking down on fraudulent Golden Visa transactions.

And Citizenship by Investment programmes?

Their biggest selling point has increasingly become their biggest legal weakness.

The faster citizenship is granted without genuine residence or meaningful ties to the country, the easier it becomes to argue that citizenship itself is being sold.

That’s exactly the legal principle behind the Malta ruling.

Too many investors spend months analysing funds, real estate or returns…

…yet overlook the resilience of the immigration programme they’re relying on.

No institutional investor ignores regulatory risk.

Why should your family’s Plan B be any different?

This is why Portugal and Italy deserve closer attention today.

They are residence programmes first—not citizenship sales.

And that may be exactly why they are proving more resilient.

A real Plan B isn’t measured by how quickly you obtain it.

It’s measured by the likelihood that it will still exist when your family actually needs it.

That’s nice… but we’re still talking about the wrong thing.

Every time a new passport ranking is published, everyone focuses on the same question: Which passport is stronger?

We think that’s the wrong question.

A Portuguese passport is undoubtedly valuable, with visa-free access to 186 destinations. But for serious international families, the passport is rarely the reason they invest.

The real asset is the residence.

It gives you options long before you ever become a citizen. A legally established foothold in Europe. Access to the Schengen Area. A genuine Plan B if your family, business or the geopolitical landscape ever changes.

That’s what you’re really investing in.

The passport isn’t the investment.

It’s the dividend.
